Are “scientific” and scriptural history compatible?

“...and in these things they do err, for they do wrest the scriptures and do not understand them” (D&C 10:63)

Many people today try to fit their scriptural faith into the secular worldview they learn in school and college.  As will be shown, this is a difficult thing to do, because “mainstream science” does not agree with many of the historical and miraculous events mentioned in the scriptures.  As a result people must eventually decide which worldview to more fully embrace at the expense of the other.  In general, this tends to be more of a subconscious decision made slowly throughout the schooling process.  The worldview that comes to dominate our mentality usually tends to be a product of which one a person is more exposed to.  Most at risk to choosing science over scripture are those seeking university degrees in science-oriented fields.  Little by little one begins to believe the interpretations of scientific evidence made by the world’s scholars over the scriptural stories learned in youth such as Noah’s flood and the Garden of Eden.  This process of compromising the scriptures continues both socially and personally throughout our schooling until Popular Science has replaced the scriptures as the intellectual foundation of our lives.  The only way to overcome this downward spiral is by getting back to the scriptures.  One must embark on a serious faith-filled study of the scriptures in order to restore God’s Word as the scientific and spiritual foundation of his or her lives.

Evolution and the Pre-Adamite Theory

Many Christian scholars try to believe in both the scriptures and organic evolution.  They suppose the scriptural account of creation can be interpreted to suggest that God used evolution to create Adam from amoebas or “the dust” over the process of millions of years.  This attempt to believe in both the philosophies of men and the revealed Word of God is doctrinally ridiculous.  It is true, of course, that God could have used evolution to create man had he chosen to do so, however, a myriad of scriptures strongly suggest that this simply is not the case.  It is for this reason that Joseph Fielding Smith declared concerning those who try to believe in both the scriptures and human evolution, “There are some who attempt to do it but they are inconsistent—absolutely inconsistent, because that doctrine is so incompatible, so utterly out of harmony, with the revelations of the Lord that a man just cannot believe in both” (Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation, 3 vols., edited by Bruce R. McConkie [Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, 1954-1956], 1: 141.).

In an attempt of faithless students to reconcile this philosophy of man to the scriptures, some have suggested that “have thought it probable that this world was inhabited before the days of Adam, who was the first "man," by a race which perished long before his advent" (J. M. Sjodahl, An Introduction to the Study of the Book of Mormon [Salt Lake City: Deseret News Press, 1927], 498.).

Following are just a few of the major doctrinal problems of embracing the human evolution or pre-Adamite philosophy.

Time frames are irreconcilably off

To attempt to believe in human evolution (or secular archeology) and the scriptures, one must first completely dismiss the words of Christ in the Doctrine and Covenants concerning the length of the earth’s temporal existence.  D&C 77:6 teaches that the earth has existed temporally for 6000 years, in other words Adam’s fall occurred about 6000 years ago (how else can you interpret it?).  Secular science teaches that “man” evolved from ape-like hominids between 20 and 500 thousand years ago.  How do we overcome this inconsistency of tens of thousands of years?

Even by dismissing the D&C scripture as somehow symbolic, one runs up against the problem of all the scriptural genealogies which show that Adam lived around 6000 years ago (give or take at the very most 1000 years).  Among these are 6 accounts spanning from Adam to Abraham. One of which is the book of Moses given by direct revelation from God to Joseph Smith. Joseph Smith also showed his faith in this chronology by elaborating upon it in the Lectures on Faith.  Likewise, the period from Abraham to David is covered by at least 10 different chronologies, which show a high degree of agreement.  The period from David to Isaiah is given in 3 genealogies and is also substantiated in numerous secular histories.  Genealogies and exact dates from Isaiah to present are laid out definitively in the Book of Mormon, and are therefore reliable beyond question.

The problem with these chronologies has in the past been that scholars, looking for ways to reconcile their secular beliefs, finding one error, and see it as reason to dismiss the whole thing. It is this same kind of reasoning that causes many to dismiss the Book of Mormon or other scriptures in general.  Most “Christians” who dismiss these chronologies in this manner do so because they have never really studied them enough to understand their reliability  (for this reason the adjoining graphs for the numerous scriptural genealogies is presented for consideration).

Adam and Eve are the Mother and Father of all living

Additionally, if Adam and Eve were truly the primal parents of the human race, as the scriptures clearly teach, then God would have had to destroy all of the other “Pre-Adamites” at some point, in order to make Adam “the father of all living” (Moses 1:34, 4:26). Yet there is no scriptural or archeological evidence to support this unfounded pre-Adamic genocide.

But say we ignore the lack of scriptural evidence and continue with this reasoning of Pre-Adamites.  The question still remains ‘at what point in the evolutionary ladder did God kill off all humanoids but Adam and Eve, plant the Garden of Eden, and place them within it in an immortal state?’  Was it 2 million years ago at the homo-habillus stage of evolution? Or did he do it 10,000 years ago, at the Neanderthal stage?  One can’t try to scientifically date Adam and Eve any later than this because overwhelming archeological evidence shows that by this point mankind already numbered in the thousands spread across the globe.

Adam farmed and rose livestock

The scriptures teach that Adam and his posterity had a full knowledge of farming and raising flocks of domesticated animals (Moses 5:17).  Secular history teaches that these practices were not used until around 3000 B.C., a full thousand years after the scriptural date given for Adam.  But again, one can’t put Adam there because by then evidence dated using “scientific means” shows that there were already thousands of humans living all over the globe.

Adam read and wrote

Yet a larger problem is the fact that the scriptures tell that Adam and his descendants both read and wrote “having a perfect undefiled language given them by God” (Moses 6:6).  Thus trying to fit the biblical story of Adam into a “scientific” framework, one would have to place him sometime around 3000 B.C. (since that’s when writing was supposedly “developed”).  Yet this cannot be since once again, archeological evidence shows that by this time thousands of people lived on nearly every continent.

Adam lived in America

Joseph Smith and other modern prophets have taught clearly that Adam lived in North America (Encyclopedia of Mormonism, 1-4 vols., edited by Daniel H. Ludlow (New York: Macmillan, 1992), 534 s.v. Garden of Eden.).  So why does all the archeological evidence show that all of early man radiated out from the Middle East (specifically North Africa and/or Southwest Asia)? Archeology shows that man did not come to America until thousands of years after he had spread throughout Eurasia.  Migration patterns match excellently with those spoke of in the scriptures after the flood, but are totally incompatible with what is known of Adam and the antediluvians.

By Adam came death

Numerous scriptures teach that by Adam’s sin, death came into the world (Romans 5:12; 1st> Corinthians 15:21-22; 2nd Nephi 2:22-23; Alma 12:23; Moses 6:47).  This doctrine is absolutely 100% irreconcilable with current dating of scientific evidence.  If by Adam’s sin, death came into the world then how can there be an unbroken fossil record supposedly going back millions of years?  How could things have been immortal if they had long since been dying and making fossils?  The doctrine of immortality and resurrection has never been popular among the “learned” and faithless, but these doctrines are central to the Plan of Salvation.  How can believers dismiss the doctrine of a literal fall without undermining the doctrine of a literal resurrection and the Plan of Salvation itself?  Instead of trying to explain away fundamental doctrines such as a literal fall, does it not make more sence to consider that perhaps current scientific interpretations are wrong?  As will be shown later a “young earth” interpretation of the geologic evidence fits perfectly with a literal interpretation of the doctrine of immortality and the Fall.

The fact is that the only reason men have invented these elaborate alternative interpretations to scriptures has been to make them fit into secular history’s framework. Why would we ever choose to place more faith in the Godless philosophies of men than we do on the scriptures?  Why not instead search for ways to base the scientific evidence upon the scriptural framework?  The children of light must make the Word of God their foundation for things “both spiritual and temporal.”

All things will be resurrected

Numerous scriptures along with testimonies of early prophets tell that the earth and animals will be resurrected just as man will be (D&C 29:22-25, Discourses of Brigham Young, p.101).  So how does one resolve the doctrinal issue of the resurrection of the trillions of animals that God used to “evolve” into man over millions of years?  Some have proposed the rather foolish argument that life before Adam did not have spirits and thus will not be resurrected.  But numerous scriptures make it clear that flesh cannot live without a spirit to quicken it (James 2:26).

Scriptures pertaining to the fall of Adam

THE CREATION ACCOUNT

(Moses 2:1)

DAY/TIME ONE

1 And it came to pass that the Lord spake unto Moses, saying: Behold, I reveal unto you concerning this heaven, and this earth; write the words which I speak.
2 And the earth was without form, and void; and I caused darkness to come up upon the face of the deep; and my Spirit moved upon the face of the water;
3 And I, God, said: Let there be light; and there was light.
4... And I, God, divided the light from the darkness.
5 And I, God, called the light Day; and the darkness, I called Night... and the evening and the morning were the first day.

DAY/TIME TWO

6 And again, I, God, said: Let there be a firmament in the midst of the water,... Let it divide the waters from the waters...
7 And I, God, made the firmament and divided the waters, yea, the great waters under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament...
8 And I, God, called the firmament Heaven; and the evening and the morning were the second day.

DAY/TIME THREE

9 And I, God, said: Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and it was so; and I, God, said: Let there be dry land; and it was so.
10 And I, God, called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters, called I the Sea...
11 And I, God, said: Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb... the fruit tree yielding fruit, after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed should be in itself upon the earth...
13 And the evening and the morning were the third day.

DAY/TIME FOUR

14 And I, God, said: Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven, to divide the day from the night, and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and for years;
15 And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth; and it was so.
16 And I, God, made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night, and the greater light was the sun, and the lesser light was the moon; and the stars also were made even according to my word.
17 And I, God, set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,
18 And the sun to rule over the day, and the moon to rule over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness...
19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

DAY/TIME FIVE

20 And I, God, said: Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl which may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.
21 And I, God, created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind...
[24 And I, God, said: Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping things, and beasts of the earth after their kind, and it was so;
25 And I, God, made the beasts of the earth after their kind, and cattle after their kind, and everything which creepeth upon the earth after his kind...]
>22 And I, God, blessed them, saying: Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the sea; and let fowl multiply in the earth;
23 And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

DAY/TIME SIX

26 And I, God, said... Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and it was so. And I, God, said: Let them have dominion... over all the earth...
27 And I, God, created man in mine own image... male and female created I them.
28 And I, God, blessed them, and said unto them: Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it, and have dominion over... the earth.
29 And I, God, said unto man: Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree in the which shall be the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
...and the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

(OUTLINE) THE CREATION OF THE EARTH

Day 1: Earth is without form and void.  God causes light to shine upon it, and divides the light and darkness by making the day and the night. (Void = an empty space, lacking, uninhabited or containing nothing or “empty & desolate”{j.s})
Day 2: God separates the waters above from the waters beneath. He calls the space between “heaven”.
Day 3: God gathers the waters together in the ocean. He creates dry land or continents. He plants grass, herbs and trees. (Herb=a seed producing plant that does not develop persistent woody tissue but dies down at the end of a growing season.)
Day 4: God places  our sun and moon. He creates days and nights, seasons and years.
Day 5: God causes the water to bring forth sea life and birds. He causes the earth to bring forth cattle, creeping things and beasts.
Day 6: God creates Adam and then Eve. He gives Adam dominion over the earth and all its life.
Day 7: God rests from his labors.

CREATION “DAYS” WERE KOLOB DAYS.

(Abr. 5:13)
13 But of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it; for in the time that thou eatest thereof, thou shalt surely die. Now I, Abraham, saw that it was after the Lord's time, which was after the time of Kolob; for as yet the Gods had not appointed unto Adam his reckoning.
[It can be assumed that the earth gets its current  reckoning at the time of the fall]

A KOLOB DAY = 1000 EARTH YEARS

(Abr. 3:4)
4 And the Lord said unto me, by the Urim and Thummim, that Kolob was after the manner of the Lord, according to its times and seasons in the revolutions thereof; that one revolution was a day unto the Lord, after his manner of reckoning, it being one thousand years according to the time appointed unto that whereon thou standest. This is the reckoning of the Lord's time, according to the reckoning of Kolob.

BY ADAM’S SIN- DEATH CAME INTO THE WORLD THINGS WERE IMMORTAL BEFORE THIS
(1 Cor. 15:21)
21 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.
22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

(Moses 6:47)
47 And as Enoch spake forth the words of God, the people trembled, and could not stand in his presence.
48 And he said unto them: Because that Adam fell, we are; and by his fall came death; and we are made partakers of misery and woe.

(Romans 5:12)
12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin...

(Moses 6:59)
59 That by reason of transgression cometh the fall, which fall bringeth death…

(Alma 12:23)
23 And now behold, I say unto you that if it had been possible for Adam to have partaken of the fruit of the tree of life at that time, there would have been no death...

(2 Nephi 2:22-23)
22 And now, behold, if Adam had not transgressed he would not have fallen, but he would have remained in the Garden of Eden. And all things which were created must have remained in the same state in which they were after they were created; and they must have remained forever, and had no end.

23 And they would have had no children; wherefore they would have remained in a state of innocence, having no joy, for they knew no misery; doing no good, for they knew no sin.

ADAM AND EVE WERE THE FIRST HUMANS ON EARTH.
(Moses 1:34)
34 And the first man of all men have I called Adam...

(Moses 4:26)
26 And Adam called his wife's name Eve, because she was the mother of all living; for thus have I, the Lord God, called the first of all women...

(Moses 6:45)
45 And death hath come upon our fathers; nevertheless we know them, and cannot deny, and even the first of all we know, even Adam.
[Adam was actually still alive at this time?]

(1 Cor. 15:45)
45 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul...

(1 Ne. 5:11)
11 ...which gave an account of the creation of the world, and also of Adam and Eve, who were our first parents;

(also 2 Ne. 5:11, 9:9, Jacob 4:3, Mosiah 16:3, Alma 12:21,26, Alma 42:2,7, Hel 6:26, Ether 8:25)

ADAM NAMED ALL THE ANIMALS OF EARTH

(Moses 3:19)
19 And out of the ground I, the Lord God, formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and commanded that they should come unto Adam, to see what he would call them; and they were also living souls; for I, God, breathed into them the breath of life, and commanded that whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that should be the name thereof.
20 And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field....
- [there must not have been too many of them]

ADAM AND EVE WERE INTELLIGENT BEINGS WHO WERE TAUGHT DIRECTLY BY GOD TO READ AND WRITE.

(Moses 6:5-8)
5 And a book of remembrance was kept, in the which was recorded, in the language of Adam, for it was given unto as many as called upon God to write by the spirit of inspiration;
6 And by them their children were taught to read and write, having a language which was pure and undefiled.
8 ...and a genealogy was kept of the children of God. And this was the book of the generations of Adam, saying: In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him;

(Moses 6:46)
46 For a book of remembrance we have written among us, according to the pattern given by the finger of God; and it is given in our own language.

THE FALL OF ADAM WAS 6000 YEARS AGO.  THE EARTH HAS EXISTED TEMPORALLY FOR 6000 YEARS, DEATH HAS BEEN ON EARTH FOR 6000 YEARS

(D&C 77:6)
6 Q. What are we to understand by the book which John saw, which was sealed on the back with seven seals?
A. We are to understand that it contains the revealed will, mysteries, and the works of God; the hidden things of his economy concerning this earth during the seven thousand years of its continuance, or its temporal existence.
7 Q. What are we to understand by the seven seals with which it was sealed?
A. We are to understand that the first seal contains the things of the first thousand years, and the second also of the second thousand years, and so on until the seventh.

(D&C 77:12)
12 Q. What are we to understand by the sounding of the trumpets, mentioned in the 8th chapter of Revelation?
A. We are to understand that as God made the world in six days, and on the seventh day he finished his work, and sanctified it, and also formed man out of the dust of the earth, even so, in the beginning of the seventh thousand years will the Lord God sanctify the earth, and complete the salvation of man... when he shall have sealed all things, unto the end of all things... in the beginning of the seventh thousand years-- the preparing of the way before the time of his coming.

(D&C 88:108)
108 And then shall the first angel again sound his trump in the ears of all living, and reveal the secret acts of men, and the mighty works of God in the first thousand years.
109 And then shall the second angel sound his trump, and reveal the secret acts of men, and the thoughts and intents of their hearts, and the mighty works of God in the second thousand years--
110 And so on, until the seventh angel shall sound his trump; and he shall stand forth upon the land and upon the sea, and swear in the name of him who sitteth upon the throne, that there shall be time no longer; and Satan shall be bound, that old serpent, who is called the devil, and shall not be loosed for the space of a thousand years.

CONTRARY TO BIBLICAL CRITICISMS, THE SCRIPTURAL TIMELINE IS DETAILED, COMPREHENSIVE AND TRUSTWORTHY.

(Moses 6:10-25, 7:68, 8:1-12, Gen. 5:3-32, 11:10-32, Lectures on Faith: Lecture Second.)
Approximately 1,978 years passed from the Fall to God’s appearance to Abraham.
(Gen. 7:6, 8:17, 9:28)
The flood occurred when Noah was 600, approximately 1,548 years after the Fall.
(Exodus 12:40, Gen. 15:13-16)
430 years passed from the time of Abraham’s vision until the Exodus.

(Galatians 4:28)
215 years passed from the time Jacob entered Egypt until the Exodus

(1 Kings 6:1)
480 years passed from the Exodus to the building of the Temple of Solomon.
(The books of Kings & Chronicles)
These books delineate years of reigns with exactness. 418 years passed from the building of the temple to the reign of Zedekiah and fall of Judah to Babylon

(1 Nephi 1:4, 2:4)
600 years passed from the time Lehi left Jerusalem (the first year of Zedekiah’s reign) to the time of Christ.
2000 years have passed since then.

The “Local” flood theory

Current interpretation of Geologic evidence upon the framework of “old earth” uniformitarianism shows no evidence whatsoever for the scriptural account of Noah’s Flood.  Because of this supposed absolute lack of evidence both stratigraphically and in the fossil record, many Christian scientists dismiss this event as either mythological, or an exaggerated story of a localized river flood.  This “local flood” hypothesis suggests that the accounts given in scripture are describing a large flood occurring on some river (like the Mississippi or Euphrates) that “appeared” to be flooding the world from a human perspective.  But as will be seen this kind of interpretation requires explaining away a large amount of scriptural evidence.  Again, the only reason that men have invented these elaborate alternative interpretations to scripture has been to make them fit into secular history’s framework.  It is a wonder that so many foolish and gullible Christians choose to place more faith in the philosophies of men than in the scriptures. Why not instead search for ways to “re-interpret” scientific evidence so that it fits into a scriptural framework?  Thus making the Word of God our foundation for things both spiritual and temporal. Following are a list of many of the points and scriptures showing that the “local flood theory” is not doctrinally plausible.

Moses’ vision was not limited by human perspective

Many scholars try to dismiss the flood account by proposing that the account as we have it is flawed because of limitations caused by human perspective.  However, these faithless apologists forget that the account of the Flood as we have it in Genesis and the Book of Moses does not come from Noah or some contemporary observer, nor is the account an oral tradition passed down through the ages. The Book of Moses, as restored to us through revelation to Joseph Smith, specifically informs us that the history of the world there given is an account of the vision to Moses in which he perceived every person and every particle of the earth “discerning it by the Spirit of God” (Moses 1:27-28).  Additionally there are a considerable number of scriptures found in every book of Cannon which testify of the truthfulness of the Genesis account, including the words of Christ himself.

The scriptures say specifically that the flood covered the whole earth

In Gen 7:19-20, Moses specifically goes into details to explain that even the mountains were covered.  He says “And the waters prevailed upon the earth; and all the high hills [mountains], that were under the whole heaven, were covered. Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail and the mountains were covered.”  Those wishing to dismiss the scriptures have focused on two details in these verses in order to destroy the accounts validity.  The first is the use of the words “high hills” in verse nineteen.  These scoffers have used this as evidence that the flood only covered the hills and not the mountains.  This is quite ridiculous, being that the words “high hills” in this verse are actually translated from the same Hebrew word used in verse twenty, where it is rightly translated “mountain”.  In fact the word is translated “mountain” in nearly every other instance it occurs (over 400 times).

The second detail is the mention that “fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains were covered”.  Some have suggested that this is further evidence that the flood was merely a local flood.  This argument is absolutely ridiculous.  Gen 6:15 informs us that the arc itself was 30 cubits tall.  Thus 15 cubits of water would be about the depth at which the arc would most likely begin float in the raising water.  Verse 17 and 18 make it clear that the fifteen cubits mentioned in verse 20 is indeed merely giving the depth at which the waters “bare up the arc”, not the total depth of the flood or the height of the mountains (a cubit is about a foot and a half, thus 15 cubits would be about 22 feet).

The scriptures say specifically that the flood killed all terrestrial animal life.

Gen 7:4, 7:21-23, 9:11-15, 1 Peter 3:19-20, 2 Peter 2:4-5, and Moses 8:26 all state quite emphatically that the flood killed all mankind and every terrestrial animal on earth.  It is interesting to note that Gen 7:22 goes as far as to clarify that aquatic life did not necessarily all die.  It specifies, “all in whose nostrils was the breath of life, of all that was in the dry land, died.”

The arc itself is obvious testimony to the global nature of the flood.

Why would God command Noah to spend as much as 100 years building an arc and gathering the animals of the earth, if it were only a local flood?  It is ridiculous.  Why would the arc stay floating for over a year while the water abated if it were only a local flood?  Who on earth has ever heard of a “local flood” taking a year to “abate”? Additionally, the account of Noah sending out a dove and raven to check for dry ground would be ridiculous if it was a local flood.

Noah was the father of all living in his day

If the flood was not global why does Moses 8:3 say that all the earth would be from Noah? Likewise why does Gen 10 tell of all the generations of the earth as they came from the loins of Noah?  Joseph Smith added further witness to this fact by stating that just like Adam, Noah “was the father of all living in [his] day” (TPJS p.157).

Why was all the earth still of one language at the tower of Babel?

The story of the tower of Babel offers yet more evidence to the fact that all but Noah and his family died in the flood.  The whole story of the tower of Babel only makes sense within the context of the flood.  If the flood was not global, how is it that after nearly 2000 years of history (or thousands more if you believe in the pre-Adamite theory) everyone in the “whole earth was [still] of one language, and of one speech” (Gen. 11:1). Additionally, the whole idea of God being angry with a nation for trying to build a huge tower (and city) in order to “make a name for [themselves], least [they] be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth” only makes sense if they were rebelling against God’s command to Noah’s children to multiply and fill the whole earth.

Why if, Adam and his posterity lived in North America (as shown above), does the cradle of civilization suddenly shift to the Middle East?  Archeology should show civilization radiating out from North America.

Why was Egypt still underwater when Egyptus discovered it (Abr. 1:24)?

Why does Ether say that, “when the waters receded off of this land [America] it became a choice land above all others” (Ether 13:2)? This scripture seems to suggest a global flood (this scripture might also be referring to the waters of creation).

How is it that The Brother of Jared heads north from the Tower of Babel into a land  “where never had man been” (Ether 2:5)?

Additionally, why did the brother of Jared have to bring all his animals to repopulate the Americas?

Furthermore, if the account is entirely symbolic as others attest; why does Christ himself use it as a historical example of how the wicked will likewise be destroyed at the Second Coming unless they repent (Luke 17:26-27)?

Why does Peter testify in two separate accounts that only eight people lived through the flood (2 Peter 2:4-5, 3:19-20)?

He also uses it to warn of the unbelief that would come in our day.  He says, “Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, and saying, where is the promise of his coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water perished (2 Peter 3:3-7).”

Why would God covenant with Noah that he would never flood the earth again?

If it were only a local flood why would God say to Noah “And I will remember my covenant which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh (Gen 9:15)”.  If the flood was merely a local flood, this statement is ridiculous, for there have been uncountable “local floods” of enormous proportions over the last few thousand years.  Like wise the words of the Lord about “destroying all flesh” would be a lie.

Following is a list of scriptural evidence for the Flood given for the reader’s consideration

MOSES’ VISION WAS FROM A GODLIKE PERSPECTIVE.

(Moses 1:8)
8 And it came to pass that Moses looked, and beheld the world upon which he was created; and Moses beheld the world and the ends thereof, and all the children of men which are, and which were created; of the same he greatly marveled and wondered.

(Moses 1:27)
27 And it came to pass, as the voice was still speaking, Moses cast his eyes and beheld the earth, yea, even all of it; and there was not a particle of it which he did not behold, discerning it by the spirit of God.
28 And he beheld also the inhabitants thereof, and there was not a soul which he beheld not; and he discerned them by the Spirit of God; and their numbers were great, even numberless as the sand upon the sea shore.
29 And he beheld many lands; and each land was called earth, and there were inhabitants on the face thereof.
[this means that the account from the flood back, is very reliable. Especially parts revealed by Joseph Smith in the JST and Moses]

GOD PROPHESIED THAT PEOPLE IN OUR DAY WOULD NOT BELIEVE MOSES’ CREATION (AND FLOOD) ACCOUNT, AND THAT MANY WOULD DENY THE ACCOUNT AS RESTORED BY JOSEPH SMITH
(Moses 1:40-42)
40 And now, Moses, my son, I will speak unto thee concerning this earth upon which thou standest; and thou shalt write the things which I shall speak.
41 And in a day when the children of men shall esteem my words as naught and take many of them form the book which thou shalt write, behold, I will raise up another like unto thee; and they shall be had again among the children of men—among as many as shall believe.
42 (These words were spoken unto Moses in the mount…And now they are spoken unto you.  Show them not unto any except them that believe.  Even so. Amen)

THE FLOOD KILLED ALL TERRESTRIAL ANIMAL LIFE
(Gen. 7:21-23)
21 And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of beast, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth, and every man:
22 All in whose nostrils was the breath of life, of all that was in the dry land, died.
23 And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark.

(Gen 6:17)
17 And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die.

THE FLOOD KILLED EVERY HUMAN ON EARTH BUT NOAH AND HIS FAMILY.

(Gen. 7:23)
23 ...and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark.

(1 Pet. 3:19-20)
19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;
20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.

(2 Pet. 2:4-5)
4 For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;
5 And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;

(Moses 8:26)
26 And the Lord said: I will destroy man whom I have created, from the face of the earth, both man and beast, and the creeping things, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth Noah that I have created them, and that I have made them; and he hath called upon me; for they have sought his life.

(Gen 9:1)
1 And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.
[Why would God tell Noah to replenish or “fill” the earth if it was already full?]

EVERYONE NOW ON EARTH DESCENDED FROM NOAH.

(Moses 8:3)
3 And it came to pass that Methuselah prophesied that from his loins should spring all the kingdoms of the earth (through Noah), and he took glory unto himself.

(Moses 7:45)
45 And it came to pass that Enoch looked; and from Noah, he beheld all the families of the earth; and he cried unto the Lord, saying: When shall the day of the Lord come? When shall the blood of the Righteous be shed, that all they that mourn may be sanctified and have eternal life?

(Gen. 10:1)
1 Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth: and unto them were sons born after the flood ...
[2-31 genealogy of people of earth after flood ...]
32 These are the families of the sons of Noah, after their generations, in their nations: and by these were the nations divided in the earth after the flood.

(Gen. 11:1)
1 And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.     (Because the whole earth was of noah!)

GOD COVENANTED WITH NOAH THAT HE WOULD NEVER SEND ANOTHER GLOBAL FLOOD TO KILL ALL LIFE ON EARTH

(Gen. 8:15-11)
15 ¶ And God spake unto Noah, saying,
16 Go forth of the ark, thou, and thy wife, and thy sons, and thy sons' wives with thee.
17 Bring forth with thee every living thing that is with thee, of all flesh, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth; that they may breed abundantly in the earth, and be fruitful, and multiply upon the earth.
18 And Noah went forth, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons' wives with him:
19 Every beast, every creeping thing, and every fowl, and whatsoever creepeth upon the earth, after their kinds, went forth out of the ark.
20 ¶ And Noah builded an altar unto the LORD; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar.
21 And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man's sake; for the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done.
22 While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.

CHRIST TESTIFIED THAT THE FLOOD OCCURRED.

(Luke 17:26-27)
26 And as it was in the days of Noe, [Noah] so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man.
27 They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe (Noah)  entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all.

(Joseph Smith-Matthew 1:41)
42 For it shall be with them, as it was in the days which were before the flood; for until the day that Noah entered into the ark they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage;
43 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of Man be.

(Moses 8:17)
17 And the Lord said unto Noah: My Spirit shall not always strive with man, for he shall know that all flesh shall die... and if men do not repent, I will send in the floods upon them...
26 And the Lord said: I will destroy man whom I have created, from the face of the earth, both man and beast, and the creeping things, and the fowls of the air...
30 And God said unto Noah: The end of all flesh is come before me, for the earth is filled with violence, and behold I will destroy all flesh from off the earth.

(3 Ne. 22:8)
8 In a little wrath I hid my face from thee for a moment, but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee, saith the Lord thy Redeemer.
9 For this, the waters of Noah unto me, for as I have sworn that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth, so have I sworn that I would not be wroth with thee.

PETER PROPHESIES OF THOSE WHO WILL NOT BELIEVE IN THE FLOOD ACCOUNT

(2 Pet. 3:3-7)
3 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,
4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.
5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:
6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:

THE FLOOD WAS GLOBAL

(Ether 13:2)
2 For behold, they rejected all the words of Ether; for he truly told them of all things, from the beginning of man; and that after the waters had receded from off the face of this land [the Americas] it became a choice land above all other lands, a chosen land of the Lord; wherefore the Lord would have that all men should serve him who dwell upon the face thereof;

(Abr. 1:21)
21 Now this king of Egypt was a descendant from the loins of Ham...
22 From this descent sprang all the Egyptians, and thus the blood of the Canaanites was preserved in the land.
23 The land of Egypt being first discovered by a woman...
24 When this woman discovered the land it was under water, who afterward settled her sons in it; and thus, from Ham, sprang that race which preserved the curse in the land.
[Egypt was still under water when Egyptus first found it-after waters further abated, she settled it]

(Gen. 10:5)
5 By these were the isles of the Gentiles divided in their lands; every one after his tongue, after their families, in their nations.
[If Egypt was still underwater when Egyptus settled it, then one can imagine that inland seas covered many lowlands of the earth, thus logically Europe and Asia were “islands” after the flood.]

THE FLOOD ACCOUNT; AS REVEALED TO MOSES.

(Gen. 7:1)
1 And the LORD said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark...
2 Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female: and of beasts that are not clean by two, the male and his female.
3 Of fowls also of the air by sevens, the male and the female; to keep seed alive upon the face of all the earth.
4 For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth...
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7 ¶ And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons' wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
11 ¶ In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
13 In the selfsame day entered Noah, and Shem, and Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah's wife, and the three wives of his sons with them, into the ark;
14 They, and every beast after his kind, and all the cattle after their kind, and every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind, and every fowl after his kind, every bird of every sort.
15 And they went in unto Noah into the ark, two and two of all flesh, wherein is the breath of life.
16 And they that went in, went in male and female of all flesh, as God had commanded him: and the LORD shut him in.
17 And the flood was forty days upon the earth; and the waters increased, and bare up the ark, and it was lift up above the earth.
18 And the waters prevailed, and were increased greatly upon the earth; and the ark went upon the face of the waters.
19 And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills, that were under the whole heaven, were covered.
20 Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains were covered.
24 And the waters prevailed upon the earth an hundred and fifty days.
CHAPTER 8
1 And God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the cattle that was with him in the ark: and God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters asswaged;
2 The fountains also of the deep and the windows of heaven were stopped, and the rain from heaven was restrained;
3 And the waters returned from off the earth continually: and after the end of the hundred and fifty days the waters were abated.
4 And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat.
5 And the waters decreased continually until the tenth month: in the tenth month, on the first day of the month, were the tops of the mountains seen.
6 ¶ And it came to pass at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made:
7 And he sent forth a raven, which went forth to and fro, until the waters were dried up from off the earth.
8 Also he sent forth a dove from him, to see if the waters were abated from off the face of the ground;
9 But the dove found no rest for the sole of her foot, and she returned unto him into the ark, for the waters were on the face of the whole earth: then he put forth his hand, and took her, and pulled her in unto him into the ark.
10 And he stayed yet other seven days; and again he sent forth the dove out of the ark;
11 And the dove came in to him in the evening; and, lo, in her mouth was an olive leaf pluckt off: so Noah knew that the waters were abated from off the earth.
12 And he stayed yet other seven days; and sent forth the dove; which returned not again unto him any more.
13 ¶ And it came to pass in the six hundredth and first year, in the first month, the first day of the month, the waters were dried up from off the earth: and Noah removed the covering of the ark, and looked, and, behold, the face of the ground was dry.
14 And in the second month, on the seven and twentieth day of the month, was the earth dried.

THE TOWER OF BABEL

(Gen. 11:1)
1 And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.
2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there...
4 And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth...
6 And the LORD said...
7 Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.
8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.
[They all had the same language because they were all descendants of Noah]

OUTLINE OF NOAH’S FLOOD
-The rain begins to fall 7 days after the animals are loaded into the arc,
 on the seventeenth day of second month. (v.4) (2/17)
-The rain falls for either 40 days, or an undetermined amount of time.
-Noah and his family enter the arc the same day the calamity begins. (v.13)
-After either 40 days or an undetermined amount of time the waters (ocean level) finally reach the arc.
-After five months (150 days) the rain stops and water stops raising
-Two months after the rain stops, the arc runs ashore in a mountainous region. (7/17)
-Two and a half months after beaching other mountain peaks are seen. (10/1)
-After 40 days a raven is sent out and no dry land
-After 7 days a dove is sent out with same result
-After 7 days another raven is sent
-After 7 days the dove doesn’t return
-Twelve months from the beginning of the flood, the hatch is opened to dry ground. (1/1)
-One month later the ground is dry enough for all to exit the arc. (2/7)
SUMMED UP
-1 month for water to reach the arc
-4 more months (5 total) for all mountains to be submerged
-2.5 more months (7.5 total) for arc to beach
-2.5 more months (10 total) till other peaks are seen
-4 more months (14 total) to finally leave arc
-Don’t know exactly how long it rained. (Record says 40 days & 40 nights)
-Don’t know how long it took to bare up the arc
-Waters began to abate 150 days after beginning.
-Mountains seen 150 days after that (So 300 days after the beginning)
-Takes 3-4 months from the time the mountains are seen until they leave.

FLOOD FACTS
-8 People were on the arc.
-Ham’s wife Egyptus preserves Cain’s seed on the earth.
-7 pairs of earth’s “clean” animals on arc
-1 pair of non-“clean” animals
-No fish are mentioned
-Flood lasts a total of 14 months
-Arc dimensions are 300 cubits long x 50 cubits wide x 30 cubits tall [Or about 450 ft long x 75 ft wide x 45 ft tall] (Gen 6:15).

The earth dividing in the days of Peleg

Another scriptural event that is absolutely irreconcilable with current interpretation of scientific evidence is the account given of the days of Peleg.  In both Genesis 10:25 and 1 Chronicles 1:19 we are told that the patriarch Peleg received his name because “in his days was the earth divided”.  This kind of plate movement is impossible according to uniformitarian principles that theorize convection currents are the driving mechanism for plate tectonics.  For this reason Christian “scholars” unanimously dismiss this scripture by postulating that it is talking about the division of the people of the earth and not its continents.  But this interpretation has a few major inconsistencies.

“Peleg” in Hebrew is a root for the word earthquake

The Hebrew word from which “Peleg” is translated is peh`-leg (6389), which means “earthquake”. It is also related to the word paw-lag` (6385), which means “to split”.  (New Strong’s Concise Dictionary of the Words in the Hebrew Bible. Strong, J., 1996)

The bible record makes a clear distinction between the division of the “earth” spoken of in Ex. 10:25 which occurs during the early days of Peleg’s life and the division of the “nations” in Ex. 10:32, which occurs throughout the years after the flood.  The Hebrew word used for earth in verse 25 is “`erets”, which is defined as “the earth at large, or partitively a land.  If the scribes were really writing about a division of the people instead of the earth itself, they would have used the Hebrew word “goy” (which is a nation or people) as they did in v. 32, and NOT a word that means earthquake!  Furthermore, it doesn’t make much sense for parents to name their child after the dividing of the people of the earth.  It does on the other hand make perfect sense for them to name him after a disturbing catastrophic earthquake associated with the first dividing episode of the continents.

At the second Coming the continents will go back together.

In D&C 133:23-24 God reveals to Joseph Smith that at his Second Coming “[God] shall command the great deep, and it shall be driven back into the north countries, and the islands shall become one land; And the land of Jerusalem and the land of Zion shall be turned back into their own place, and the earth shall be like as it was in the days before it was divided.”  This scripture is pretty clear.  One must become pretty creative in order to invent an interpretation that does not vindicate catastrophism.  Some have suggested that this scripture is merely predicting that sea level will fall, causing Eurasia and Alaska to be “reconnected” via the baring land bridge.  This interpretation is ridiculous given the wording of the prophecy.  God says that “the land of Jerusalem” (Eurasia) and the land of Zion (North America) will be “turned back into their own place”.  This term certainly suggests motion, and is further explained in the book of Revelation where John says at the coming of Christ he say “the stars of heaven fell unto the earth…and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.” (Rev. 6:13-14, 16:20)  (Locations of Zion & Jerusalem given in D&C 45:66-67, 57:2-3, Ether 13:3-11)

The fact that the phrase “as it was in the days before it was divided” is alluding to the dividing of the land in Gen. 10:25is not only clear from the phraseology itself, but it has also been explained in depth by many prophets and apostles such as Parley P. Pratt, John Taylor, Joseph F. Smith, Joseph Fielding Smith, Bruce R. McKonkie and others.

Mormon, Moroni, John, and Christ himself all testified that the “earth would be wrapped together as a scroll” (Morm. 5:22-24, Morm 9:1, 3 Ne. 26:3-4, Rev 6:14).  The most obvious interpretation for this phrase is that discussed in this section, just as the two ends of a scroll roll together so will the continents roll back together again forming one land.   This scripture along with many others strongly suggest that plate tectonics is driven by catastrophe, not mantle convection.

List of scriptural evidence for the Days of Peleg given for the reader’s consideration

DIVISION OF CONTINENTS IN DAYS OF PELEG

(Gen. 10:25)
25 And unto Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg; for in his days was the earth divided;

(1 Chr. 1:19)
19 And unto Eber were born two sons: the name of the one was Peleg; because in his days the earth was divided:

DOCTRINE AND COVENANTS ADDS A SECOND WITNESS

(D&C 133:22-24)
24 And the land of Jerusalem and the land of Zion shall be turned back into their own place, and the earth shall be like as it was in the days before it was divided.

AT SECOND COMING CONTINENTS TO BE RESTORED INTO ONE LANDMASS.

(D&C 133:22-24)
22 And it shall be a voice as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder, which shall break down the mountains, and the valleys shall not be found.
23 He shall command the great deep, and it shall be driven back into the north countries, and the islands shall become one land;
24 And the land of Jerusalem and the land of Zion shall be turned back into their own place, and the earth shall be like as it was in the days before it was divided.

CONTINENTS ROLLING BACK TOGETHER IS LIKENED TO A SCROLL ROLLING TOGETHER.

(Morm. 5:22-24)
22 And then, O ye Gentiles, how can ye stand before the power of God, except ye shall repent and turn from your evil ways?
23 Know ye not that ye are in the hands of God? Know ye not that he hath all power, and at his great command the earth shall be rolled together as a scroll?

(Morm 9:1,)
1 And now, I speak unto those who do not believe in Christ.
2 Behold, will ye believe in the day of your visitation–behold, when the Lord shall come, yea, even that great day when the earth shall be rolled together as a scroll, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, yea, in the great day when ye shall be brought to stand before the Lamb of God–then will ye say that there is no God?

(3 Ne. 26:3-4)
3 And he [Christ] did expound all things, even from the beginning until the time that he should come in his glory-- yea, even all things which should come upon the face of the earth, even until the elements should melt with fervent heat, and the earth should be wrapt together as a scroll

(Rev. 6:14)
14 And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.

CONTINENTS WERE ONE BEFORE PELEG.

(Moses 2:9)
9 And I, God, said: Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and it was so; and I, God, said: Let there be dry land; and it was so.

GEOGRAPHY WAS DIFFERENT BEFORE THE FLOOD AND PELEG

(D&C 117:6-8)
6 ... Have I not made the earth?...
8 Is there not room enough on the mountains of Adam-ondi-Ahman, and on the plains of Olaha Shinehah, or the land where Adam dwelt...

[Missouri is not currently what you would call mountainous, but Geologists have found that it was during the early Paleozoic Period.]
(Moses 3:8/Gen. 2:8)
8 ¶ And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.

(Moses 6:41)
41 And he said unto them: I came out from the land of Cainan, the land of my fathers, a land of righteousness unto this day. And my father taught me in all the ways of God.
42 And it came to pass, as I journeyed from the land of Cainan, by the sea east, I beheld a vision...

[Missouri is not presently on the east coast of America, or “Pangea”, but Geologists have found that it was on the coast of Laurentia during the early Paleozoic.]

(Moses 3:10-14)
10 And I, the Lord God, caused a river to go out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads.
11 And I, the Lord God, called the name of the first Pison, and it compasseth the whole land of Havilah...
13 And the name of the second river was called Gihon...
14 And the name of the third river was Hiddekel...
[This verse does not make sense given the current geography of the earth.

(Ether 2:1)
1 And it came to pass that Jared and ... the friends of Jared and his brother and their families, went down into the valley which was northward, (and the name of the valley was Nimrod) ...
5 And it came to pass that the Lord commanded them that they should go forth into the wilderness, yea, into that quarter where there never had man been...
6 And it came to pass that they did travel in the wilderness, and did build barges, in which they did cross many waters, being directed continually by the hand of the Lord.
7 And the Lord would not suffer that they should stop beyond the sea in the wilderness, but he would that they should come forth even unto the land of promise...
13 And... it came to pass that the Lord did bring Jared and his brethren forth even to that great sea which divideth the lands. And as they came to the sea they pitched their tents... and dwelt in tents upon the seashore for the space of four years.

[This shows Noah landed in the old world. There are several aspects of it which seem different than today’s geography]

The death of Christ

The destructions at the death of Christ as recorded in the book of Mormon are the most descriptive and convincing account of catastrophe found in scripture. More than two chapters in Third Nephi are devoted exclusively to giving a detailed account of the catastrophe that occurred in relation to Christ’s death.  These destructions were also seen and foretold by prophets such as Enoch, Zenos, Nephi, Samuel and many others.  As descriptive as these passages are, some have suggested that these destructions were merely the product of local volcanism acting under uniformitarian principles.  As is nearly always the case, attempts such as this to minimize scriptural catastrophes are almost always made by those who are trying to fit the scriptures into their false scientific beliefs.  Parley P. Pratt in his book Voice of Warning said about the time of Christ:

When I read the Book of Mormon, it informs me that while Christ was crucified among the Jews, this whole American continent was shaken to its foundation, that many cities were sunk, and waters came up in their places; that the rocks were all rent in twain; that mountains were thrown up to an exceeding height; and other mountains became valleys; the level roads spoiled, and the whole face of the land changed. I then exclaim, These things are no longer a mystery; I have now learned to account for the many wonders, which I everywhere behold, throughout the whole country. When I am passing a ledge of rocks and see they have all been rent and torn asunder, while some huge fragments are found deeply imbedded in the earth, some rods from whence they were torn, I exclaim, with astonishment, These were the groans! the conclusive throes of agonizing nature! while the Son of God suffered upon the cross! (Parley P. Pratt, A Voice of Warning [New York City: Eastern States Mission [189-?], 91 - 92.)

That massive volcanism was associated with the destructions at Christ death seems obvious.  But for those who hold that the event was purely a local volcanic episode and not a global catastrophe in which tectonic plates moved and made mountains, the following points are given for consideration.

If the destructions spoke of in the Book of Mormon were merely local volcanism and not a global catastrophe, then how is it that the earth shook in both the New World and Israel (Matt 27:51; Mark 15:38; Luke 23:45 cf. Moses 7:55-56)?  Something very “un-uniform” must have been going on to cause such great earthquakes on both sides of the world at the same time.

Additionally, if the destructions in the Book of Mormon were caused by mere local volcanism in America, then how do you explain the three hours of darkness in Israel?  Not only this, but the timing of darkness on each side of the world suggests something very peculiar.  The New Testament (Matt 27:45; Mark 15:33) states that “there was darkness over all the land” from the six hour until the ninth hour.  In other words, although the earth began to shake on both hemispheres at same time, Israel’s darkness came three hours before Christ’s death, whereas the America’s became darkened after his death (3 Nephi 8 especially verse 19).  Since the earth rotates counter-clockwise, if some celestial object caused the darkness, a shadow would naturally be cast on Israel before it fell upon the Americas.  The reason that the darkness lasted so much longer in America is most likely due to the massive volcanism associated with the event.

In 3 Nephi 9:4 the Lord says he caused the city of Moroni to be “sunk in the depths of the sea” so that its inhabitants were drowned.  Note that he does not say that he caused the water to come upon the city as would be expected if it was destroyed by a tidal wave.  Instead he suggests that he caused the land where the city was built to sink beneath sea level.

The cities of Onihah, Mocum, and Jerusalem the Lord says “and waters have I caused to come up in the stead thereof, to hide their wickedness and abominations form before my face” (3 Ne. 9:7).  This wording suggests that sea level rose upon these cities.  The fact that these cities were not merely destroyed by an earthquake induced tidal wave is further proven by 4 Nephi 1:7-9. In these verses Moroni tells us that the Nephites rebuilt many of the cities that had been burned in the catastrophe.  Then he adds “but there were many cities which had been sunk, and waters came up in the stead thereof; therefore these cities could not be renewed.”  This shows that these cities remained underwater, proving that it was a tectonically induced change in sea level that caused their demise.

In 3 Nephi 8:10 we are told, “the earth was carried up upon the city of Moronihah, that in the place of the city there became a great mountain”.  The scripture does not say the earth or a mountain came down upon the city as would be expected if it were destroyed by a landslide, nor does it use wording suggesting it was covered by a volcano.  The words “carried up upon” seem to suggest that the city was destroyed by tectonic movement which thrust the earth upon itself.  These kinds of features are called “thrust belts” or “overturned thrusts” in geology.

Additionally, God names six cities that he says “I caused to be sunk, and made hills and valleys in the places thereof; and the inhabitants thereof have I buried up the depths of the earth” (3 Ne 9:8).  Has a volcano ever sunk a city in the earth so that a valley was left in its place?  Perhaps a landslide could cover a city and make a hill in its place, but to make a valley in the place of a buried town suggests a tectonic catastrophe. (although very rare, volcanic calderas can form valleys, but there are none of these in mexico or guatamala)

It is also interesting to note that it seems the catastrophe was of significant enough proportions to affect global weather.  In Acts 11:28 we find a prophet named Agabus prophesying that shortly after the death of Christ, there would be a great dearth throughout all the world.  The record then verifies that this dearth did in fact occur as prophesied.

It is amazing given the clear wording and extensive descriptions in the Book of Mormon that anyone could really dismiss the fact that it was a global catastrophe of enormous proportions.  Following are examples of scripture wording that clearly suggests global catastrophe.

Nephi says “and I saw the earth and the rocks that they rent; and I saw mountains tumbling into pieces; and I saw the plains if the earth, that they were broken up; and I saw many cities that they were sunk…and I saw many that did tumble to the earth because of the quaking thereof...and I saw multitudes who had not fallen because of the great and terrible judgments of the Lord” (1 Ne 12:3-5).  Given these scriptures, how can we suggest that these “great and terrible judgments” which were visited upon the earth’s inhabitants for rejecting and killing God’s Son were just a few volcanic eruptions?

Prophets saw this catastrophe even as early as Enoch.  In Moses 7:55-56 we learn that “the Lord said unto Enoch: Look, and he looked and beheld the Son of Man lifted up on the cross after the manner of men; And he heard a loud voice; and the heavens were veiled; and all the creations of God mourned; and the earth groaned; and the rocks were rent”.  Again, does this event seem like just a few volcanoes?

The prophet Zenos was also shown the catastrophe that would befall the earth at the death of the Savior.  He says that the destructions would be a sign unto “the isles of the sea”, suggesting that destructions would most severe on continents and islands other than Eurasia.  Zenos says that God would visit the inhabitants of the earth “by tempest…and by the opening of the earth, and by mountains which shall be carried up”.  And that “the rocks of the earth must rend; and because of the groaning of the earth, many of the kings of the isles of the sea shall be wrought upon by the Spirit of God to exclaim; The God of nature suffers” (1 Ne 19:10-13).

The prophet Samuel was also shown the catastrophe that would happen at Christ’s death.  He gives a very graphic description of this event in Helaman 14:20-25.  He says “Yea, at the time that he shall yield up the ghost there shall be thunderings and lightnings for the space of many hours, and the earth shall shake and tremble; and the rocks which are upon the face of this earth, which are both above the earth and beneath, which ye know at this time are solid, or the more part of it is one solid mass, shall be broken up; Yea, they shall be rent in twain and shall ever after be found in seams and in cracks, and in broken fragments upon the face of the whole earth, yea, both above the earth and beneath.  And behold, there shall be great tempests, and there shall be many mountains laid low, like unto a valley, and there shall be many places which are now called valleys which shall become mountains, whose height is great. And many highways shall be broken up, and many cities shall become desolate.”

This was not just a local volcanic event.  These scriptures show vividly that the destructions at the time of Christ were catastrophic.  Plates moved and mountains were formed all in the space of “about three hours” (3 Nephi 8:19).

The fact that the events at the time of Christ are opposite those at the time of Moses is further evidence to its catastrophic nature.  At the time of Moses there were three days of darkness in the land where “no fire could be kindled…” associated with many plagues and destructions (Ex. 10:21).  Fifty years later there was a prolonged period of light as the sun stood still in the sky for Joshua.  The signs at the time of Christ 1400 years later were repeated in a reverse order.  At Christ’s birth there is a prolonged period of light (3 Ne. 1:15-21).  This was followed 34 years later by the three days of darkness in which “there could be no light…because of the darkness, neither candles, neither torches; neither could there be fire kindled.” (3 Ne. 8:20-23).

Following is a list of scriptural evidence concerning the destructions at the death of Christ given for the reader’s consideration

PROPHESY OF THE SIGN OF CHRIST’S BIRTH

(Hel 14:3-6)
3 And behold, this will I give unto for a sign at the time of his coming; for behold, there shall be great lights [note the plural] in heaven, insomuch that in the night before he cometh there shall be no darkness, insomuch that it shall appear unto man as if it was day.
4 Therefore, there shall be one day and a night and a day, as if it were one day and there were no night; and this shall be unto you for a sign; for ye shall know of the rising of the sun and also of its setting; therefore they shall know of a surety that there shall be two days and a night; nevertheless the night shall not be darkened; and it shall be the night before he is born.
5 And behold, there shall a new star arise, such an one as ye never have beheld and this also shall be a sign unto you.
6 And behold this is not all, there shall be many signs and wonders in heaven.

PROPHESIES OF DESTRUCTIONS AT CHRIST’S DEATH

(1 Ne. 12:3-5)
3 And it came to pass that I beheld many generations pass away, after the manner of wars and contentions in the land; and I beheld many cities, yea, even that I did not number them.
4 And it came to pass that I saw a mist of darkness on the face of the land of promise; and I saw lightnings, and I heard thunderings, and earthquakes, and all manner of tumultuous noises; and I saw the earth and the rocks, that they rent; and I saw mountains tumbling into pieces; and I saw the plains of the earth, that they were broken up; and I saw many cities that they were sunk; and I saw many that they were burned with fire; and I saw many that did tumble to the earth, because of the quaking thereof.
5 And it came to pass after I saw these things, I saw the vapor of darkness, that it passed from off the face of the earth; and behold, I saw multitudes who had not fallen because of the great and terrible judgments of the Lord.

(1 Ne. 19:10-13)
...according to the words of Zenos, which he spake concerning the three days of darkness, which should be a sign given of his death unto those who should inhabit the isles of the sea, more especially given unto those who are of the house of Israel.
11 For thus spake the prophet: The Lord God surely shall visit all the house of Israel at that day, some with his voice, because of their righteousness, unto their great joy and salvation, and others with the thunderings and the lightnings of his power, by tempest, by fire, and by smoke, and vapor of darkness, and by the opening of the earth, and by mountains which shall be carried up.
12 And all these things must surely come, saith the prophet Zenos. And the rocks of the earth must rend; and because of the groanings of the earth, many of the kings of the isles of the sea shall be wrought upon by the Spirit of God, to exclaim: The God of nature suffers.

(2 Ne. 26:5-6)
5 And they that kill the prophets, and the saints, the depths of the earth shall swallow them up, saith the Lord of Hosts; and mountains shall cover them, and whirlwinds shall carry them away, and buildings shall fall upon them and crush them to pieces and grind them to powder.
6 And they shall be visited with thunderings, and lightnings, and earthquakes, and all manner of destructions, for the fire of the anger of the Lord shall be kindled against them,

(Hel. 14:20-25)
20 But behold, as I said unto you concerning another sign, a sign of his death, behold, in that day that he shall suffer death the sun shall be darkened and refuse to give his light unto you; and also the moon and the stars; and there shall be no light upon the face of this land, even from the time that he shall suffer death, for the space of three days, to the time that he shall rise again from the dead.
21 Yea, at the time that he shall yield up the ghost there shall be thunderings and lightnings for the space of many hours, and the earth shall shake and tremble; and the rocks which are upon the face of this earth, which are both above the earth and beneath, which ye know at this time are solid, or the more part of it is one solid mass, shall be broken up;
22 Yea, they shall be rent in twain [to be torn violently in two], and shall ever after be found in seams and in cracks, and in broken fragments upon the face of the whole earth, yea, both above the earth and beneath.
23 And behold, there shall be great tempests, and there shall be many mountains laid low, like unto a valley, and there shall be many places which are now called valleys which shall become mountains, whose height is great.
24 And many highways shall be broken up, and many cities shall become desolate.
25 And many graves shall be opened, and shall yield up many of their dead; and many saints shall appear unto many.

THE SIGN OF CHRIST BIRTH

(3 Ne. 1:15)
15 And it came to pass that the words which came unto Nephi were fulfilled, according as they had been spoken; for behold, at the going down of the sun there was no darkness; and the people began to be astonished because there was no darkness when the night came.
16 And there were many, who had not believed the words of the prophets, who fell to the earth and became as if they were dead, for they knew that the great plan of destruction which they had laid for those who believed in the words of the prophets had been frustrated; for the sign which had been given was already at hand...
19 And it came to pass that there was no darkness in all that night, but it was as light as though it was mid-day. And it came to pass that the sun did rise in the morning again, according to its proper order; and they knew that it was the day that the Lord should be born, because of the sign which had been given...
21 And it came to pass also that a new star did appear, according to the word.

[Note: It also appears that there were numerous other peculiar cosmic phenomena which occurred throughout the time between Christ’s birth and death (Hel 14:6, 3 Ne 2:1-2).]

DESTRUCTIONS AT CHRIST’S DEATH
(3 Ne. 8:5-25)
5 And it came to pass in the thirty and fourth year, in the first month, on the fourth day of the month, there arose a great storm, such an one as never had been known in all the land.
6 And there was also a great and terrible tempest; and there was terrible thunder, insomuch that it did shake the whole earth as if it was about to divide asunder.
7 And there were exceedingly sharp lightnings, such as never had been known in all the land.
8 And the city of Zarahemla did take fire.
9 And the city of Moroni did sink into the depths of the sea, and the inhabitants thereof were drowned.
10 And the earth was carried up upon the city of Moronihah, that in the place of the city there became a great mountain.
11 And there was a great and terrible destruction in the land southward.
12 But behold, there was a more great and terrible destruction in the land northward; for behold, the whole face of the land was changed, because of the tempest and the whirlwinds, and the thunderings and the lightnings, and the exceedingly great quaking of the whole earth;
13 And the highways were broken up, and the level roads were spoiled, and many smooth places became rough.
14 And many great and notable cities were sunk, and many were burned, and many were shaken till the buildings thereof had fallen to the earth, and the inhabitants thereof were slain, and the places were left desolate.
15 And there were some cities which remained; but the damage thereof was exceedingly great, and there were many in them who were slain.
16 And there were some who were carried away in the whirlwind; and whither they went no man knoweth, save they know that they were carried away.
17 And thus the face of the whole earth became deformed, because of the tempests, and the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the quaking of the earth.
18 And behold, the rocks were rent in twain; they were broken up upon the face of the whole earth, insomuch that they were found in broken fragments, and in seams and in cracks, upon all the face of the land.
19 And it came to pass that when the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the storm, and the tempest, and the quakings of the earth did cease-- for behold, they did last for about the space of three hours; and it was said by some that the time was greater; nevertheless, all these great and terrible things were done in about the space of three hours-- and then behold, there was darkness upon the face of the land.
20 And it came to pass that there was thick darkness upon all the face of the land, insomuch that the inhabitants thereof who had not fallen could feel the vapor of darkness;
21 And there could be no light, because of the darkness, neither candles, neither torches; neither could there be fire kindled with their fine and exceedingly dry wood, so that there could not be any light at all;
22 And there was not any light seen, neither fire, nor glimmer, neither the sun, nor the moon, nor the stars, for so great were the mists of darkness which were upon the face of the land.
23 And it came to pass that it did last for the space of three days that there was no light seen; and there was great mourning and howling and weeping among all the people continually; yea, great were the groanings of the people, because of the darkness and the great destruction which had come upon them.
24 And in one place they were heard to cry, saying: O that we had repented before this great and terrible day, and then would our brethren have been spared, and they would not have been burned in that great city Zarahemla.
25 And in another place they were heard to cry and mourn, saying: O that we had repented before this great and terrible day, and had not killed and stoned the prophets, and cast them out; then would our mothers and our fair daughters, and our children have been spared, and not have been buried up in that great city Moronihah. And thus were the howlings of the people great and terrible.

[Definitions: Rent in twain- to tare violently in two. Tempest- a storm or earthquake.]

(3 Ne. 9:3-11)
3 Behold, that great city Zarahemla have I burned with fire, and the inhabitants thereof.
4 And behold, that great city Moroni have I caused to be sunk in the depths of the sea, and the inhabitants thereof to be drowned.
5 And behold, that great city Moronihah have I covered with earth, and the inhabitants thereof, to hide their iniquities and their abominations from before my face,
6 And behold, the city of Gilgal have I caused to be sunk, and the inhabitants thereof to be buried up in the depths of the earth;
7 Yea, and the city of Onihah and the inhabitants thereof, and the city of Mocum and the inhabitants thereof, and the city of Jerusalem and the inhabitants thereof; and waters have I caused to come up in the stead thereof, to hide their wickedness and abominations from before my face,
8 And behold, the city of Gadiandi, and the city of Gadiomnah, and the city of Jacob, and the city of Gimgimno, all these have I caused to be sunk, and made hills and valleys in the places thereof; and the inhabitants thereof have I buried up in the depths of the earth, to hide their wickedness and abominations from before my face,
9 And behold, that great city Jacobugath, which was inhabited by the people of king Jacob, have I caused to be burned with fire because of their sins and their wickedness, which was above all the wickedness of the whole earth, because of their secret murders and combinations; for it was they that did destroy the peace of my people and the government of the land; therefore I did cause them to be burned, to destroy them from before my face,
10 And behold, the city of Laman, and the city of Josh, and the city of Gad, and the city of Kishkumen, have I caused to be burned with fire, and the inhabitants thereof, because of their wickedness
11 And because they did cast them all out, that there were none righteous among them, I did send down fire and destroy them, that their wickedness and abominations might be hid from before my face, that the blood of the prophets and the saints whom I sent among them might not cry unto me from the ground against them.

(3 Ne. 10:9-10)
9 And it came to pass that thus did the three days pass away. And it was in the morning, and the darkness dispersed from off the face of the land, and the earth did cease to tremble, and the rocks did cease to rend, and the dreadful groanings did cease, and all the tumultuous noises did pass away.
10 And the earth did cleave together again, that it stood; and the mourning, and the weeping, and the wailing of the people who were spared alive did cease;

(3 Ne. 11:1-2)
1 And now it came to pass that there were a great multitude gathered together, of the people of Nephi, round about the temple which was in the land Bountiful; and they were marveling and wondering one with another, and were showing one to another the great and marvelous change which had taken place.

(4 Ne 1:7-9)
7 And the Lord did prosper them exceedingly in the land; yea, insomuch that they did build cities again where there had been cities burned.
8 Yea, even that great city Zarahemla did they caused to be built again.
9 But there were many cities which had been sunk, and waters came up in the stead thereof therefore these cities could not be renewed.

NEW TESTAMENT DESTRUCTIONS AT THE TIME OF CHRIST

(Matt. 27:45) (Mark 15:33)
45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.

(Matt. 27:50-51)
50 ¶ Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.
51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;

(Acts 11:27-28)
27 ¶ And in these days came prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch.
28 And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified by the Spirit that there should be great dearth throughout all the world: which came to pass in the days of Claudius Caesar.

Picking and choosing which miracles we will believe.

Among members of the church, one of common traps to fall into is compartmentalization.  Because our society has done it, it is easy to put our religion and belief in the scriptures in one compartment in our mind and then place the things we learn in school in another.  We become fence sitters and espouse the ideologies of God and Mammon without even knowing it.  We go to church and believe as we learn about immortality, the Fall of Adam, Noah’s Flood, and the Second Coming.  Then we go to school and likewise believe as we learn about life existing for millions of years on earth, humans living in the Stone Age, and what the earth will be like in another million years all the while never putting two and two together to realize that these ideologies are not compatible.  Many “learned” people in the Church believe that Christ did miracles, and that there will be mild catastrophes at the Second Coming, and yet they don’t believe in Noah’s Flood, the days of Peleg, or that Adam’s fall initiated death on earth.  Mormon talked of these people when he said:

9 For do we not read that God is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and him there is no variableness neither shadow of changing?
10 And now, if ye have imagined up unto yourselves a god who doth vary, and in whom there is shadow of changing, then imagined up unto yourselves a god who is not a God of miracles…
18 And who shall say that Jesus Christ did not do many mighty miracles? And there were many mighty miracles wrought by the hands of the apostles.
19 And if there were miracles wrought then, why has God ceased to be a God of miracles and yet be an unchangeable Being? And behold, I say unto you he changeth not; if so he would cease to be God; and he ceaseth not to be God, and is a God of miracles.  (Mormon 9:9-12)

Those who believe that Christ raised the dead, and yet do not believe that God could flood the earth, or form the earth’s mountains in only 6000 years, believe in a variable God.  We must realize that God has “all power, both in heaven and in earth” (Mosiah 4:9).  We must remember that although he is subject to certain laws (D&C 130:20-21) those laws are so far above our understanding that for our purposes we can have faith that “with God all things are possible” (Matt. 19:26; Mark 10:27). The following scriptures show that God is not bound by, what we with our puny understanding of the universe call the laws of nature.  (i.e. laws such as the speed of light, the force of gravity, and kinetics of the atom.)

Following is a list of many of the miracles of Christ, and the power they show

Changing of water to wine:  Because wine is made of entirely different molecular components (and atoms) than water, this miracles shows that God truly does have power over even the “dust of the earth” (Ex. 8:17; Mosiah 2:25; Hel. 12:8; Mormon 9:17).  In order to change six water pots of H2O into a substance containing a multitude of other atoms, God obviously has the power to arrange and change atomic configurations at will.  Thus if he can command hydrogen atoms to be rearranged into Carbon atoms then he truly could command the ocean itself to become earth as Nephi said (1 Nephi 17:50).  Likewise we must suppose he also could command the ocean floor to be changed into enough water to drown the earth.  God’s control of the laws of nature is so far above our understanding that he could use any one of a hundred ways to produce his miracles (John 2:1-11).

Feeding the 5000:  In this instance God caused 5 loafs of bread and 5 fish to multiply out of thin air into bushels.  Again, atoms in the air are being rearranged to form the myriad of atoms and molecules found in bread and fish. Once more this shows that God has control over atomic matter and its organization (Matt. 14:15-21; Mark 6:35-44; Luke 9:10-17; John 6:5-14).  If we believe this miracle, it should be easy for us to believe that God could split the Red Sea causing it to form “a wall… on their right hand, and on their left” (Ex. 14:22).  Nor should it be difficult to believe that God rearranged atomic matter to form the bodies of Adam, Eve, and animals in the Garden of Eden.

Healing the blind, lame and sick: The healing of deformed bones and blind eyes once again shows that God can command matter. In order to do these miracles God obviously has command of organic cells and the molecular chemicals needed for those cells to spontaneously multiply and rearrange (Matt 9:27; Mark 7:31; 8:22; Luke 14:1-6; 17:12-19; 22:50-51; John 4:46-54; 5:1-16; 9:1-7).

Raising the dead:  Lazereth had been in the grave for 4 Days.  By this time his body would have begun to decompose.  That Christ brought him back to life again shows God’s power over matter.  He has the power to unite and reunite spirit and element. He has the power to command that element to arrange itself into the appropriate positions (John 11:1-44).  Not only did Christ restore life to himself and three others (Mark 5:22-23, 35-42; Luke 8:41-42, 49-55; 7:11-17), He also initiated the first resurrection so that after his own resurrection, “the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many” (Matt. 27:52-53).

 The draught of fishes:  This miracle shows that God has power over the animal kingdom (Luke 7:11-16; John 21:5-6).  As Jacob says, “if God being able to speak and the world was, and to speak and man was created, O then, why not able to command the earth, or the workmanship of his hands upon the face of it, according to his will and pleasure”(Jacob 4:9)?  Knowing this, it should not be hard to believe that God could help Noah retrieve the animals for the arc, which where to be saved from the flood.

Ascending and Descending form heaven (Law of gravity) (John 1:51; 20:17; Acts 1:9; 3 Nephi 11:8; JS—H 1:16-17, 30, 43, 45)

Visiting all his different planets (speed of light) (D&C 8846-61 cf. Journal of Discourses 17:331-32).  We can safely presume that God does not take light-years to travel between the furthest reaches of his creations.

God has all power: We need a return to faith

What we need is faith!  If we are to overcome the stumbling blocks of the gentiles we must have faith and get back to the scriptures. God has all power in heaven and earth, and that man in his pride, has never quite been able to accept this fact. In all that man has learned in the past few hundred years, we have not even begun to scratch the surface of understanding the science of God’s laws and creations.  In His glory, He directs the affairs of worlds without number.  At His will he puts planets in orbit, maintaining them with his power. If He wants to cause an earthquake, He does it.  If He wants a comet to destroy a particular city for their crimes, it is done.  He controls the very elements of matter.  If He wants an atom to split, it is done. If He wants particular atoms to rearrange themselves into different elements, they do it. He has the ability to use any one of a number of methods to accomplish His miracles. If He wants the Red Sea to divide, he can do it with wind, with tide, or by just commanding the very water molecules themselves to move!  If He wants the sun to stand still in the sky, He can stop the earth in its tracks and then re-spin it. He could flip the earth upside down or He could send another celestial body by to cause the earth to reel “back” on its axis.  The point is that God has all power! Regardless of whether our puny understanding of the laws of science can explain it.

(Hel. 12:7)
7 O how great is the nothingness of the children of men; yea, even they are less than the dust of the earth.
8 For behold, the dust of the earth moveth hither and thither, to the dividing asunder, at the command of our great and everlasting God.
9 Yea, behold at his voice do the hills and the mountains tremble and quake.
10 And by the power of his voice they are broken up, and become smooth, yea, even like unto a valley.
11 Yea, by the power of his voice doth the whole earth shake;
12 Yea, by the power of his voice, do the foundations rock, even to the very center.
13 Yea, and if he say unto the earth-- Move-- it is moved.
14 Yea, if he say unto the earth-- Thou shalt go back, that it lengthen out the day for many hours-- it is done;
15 And thus, according to his word the earth goeth back, and it appeareth unto man that the sun standeth still; yea, and behold, this is so; for surely it is the earth that moveth and not the sun.
16 And behold, also, if he say unto the waters of the great deep-- Be thou dried up-- it is done.
17 Behold, if he say unto this mountain-- Be thou raised up, and come over and fall upon that city, that it be buried up-- behold it is done.
18 And behold, if a man hide up a treasure in the earth, and the Lord shall say-- Let it be accursed, because of the iniquity of him who hath hid it up-- behold, it shall be accursed.
19 And if the Lord shall say-- Be thou accursed, that no man shall find thee from this time henceforth and forever-- behold, no man getteth it henceforth and forever.

(Jacob 4:6)
6 Wherefore, we search the prophets, and we have many revelations and the spirit of prophecy; and having all these witnesses we obtain a hope, and our faith becometh unshaken, insomuch that we truly can command in the name of Jesus and the very trees obey us, or the mountains, or the waves of the sea…
8 Behold, great and marvelous are the works of the Lord. How unsearchable are the depths of the mysteries of him; and it is impossible that man should find out all his ways. And no man knoweth of his ways save it be revealed unto him; wherefore, brethren, despise not the revelations of God.
9 For behold, by the power of his word man came upon the face of the earth, which earth was created by the power of his word. Wherefore, if God being able to speak and the world was, and to speak and man was created, O then, why not able to command the earth, or the workmanship of his hands upon the face of it, according to his will and pleasure?

(1 Ne. 17:50)
50 And I said unto them: If God had commanded me to do all things I could do them. If he should command me that I should say unto this water, be thou earth, it should be earth; and if I should say it, it would be done.

(1 Ne. 17:46)
46 And ye also know that by the power of his almighty word he can cause the earth that it shall pass away; yea, and ye know that by his word he can cause the rough places to be made smooth, and smooth places shall be broken up. O, then, why is it, that ye can be so hard in your hearts?

Uniformitarianism on trial: The Second Coming, an eminent global catastrophe

Does it really seem logical to reason that the earth will experience wild catastrophes at the Second Coming but yet has somehow been uniform for the past hundreds of millions of years?  Especially considering that nearly every catastrophe prophesied to occur at the Second Coming is found in scripture to have already occurred in the past as well.  Everything from the earth reeling to and fro like a drunken man, to mountains being made and moved is found in scriptural records of the past.  We just need to start believing that the scriptures truly mean what they say.  Moroni tells us that as soon as we begin to do this, we will start to see them fulfilled in very deed.

(Ether 4:13)
13 Come unto me, O ye Gentiles, and I will show unto you the greater things, the knowledge which is hid up because of unbelief…
15 Behold, when ye shall rend that veil of unbelief which doth cause you to remain in your awful state of wickedness, and hardness of heart, and blindness of mind, then shall the great and marvelous things which have been hid up from the foundation of the world from you—yea…
16 And then shall my revelations which I have caused to be written by my servant John be unfolded in the eyes of all the people. Remember, when ye see these things, ye shall know that the time is at hand that they shall be made manifest in very deed.

If the axis has never shifted why did the sun go back 15 degrees in the sky

Why did it hold still for a whole day

Why do 5 Scriptures say it will wobble?

EARTH TO WOBBLE ON ITS AXIS

(D&C 88:87-92)
87 For not many days hence and the earth shall tremble and reel to and fro as a drunken man; and the sun shall hide his face, and shall refuse to give light; and the moon shall be bathed in blood; and the stars shall become exceedingly angry, and shall cast themselves down as a fig that falleth from off a fig-tree.
88 And after your testimony cometh wrath and indignation upon the people.
89 For after your testimony cometh the testimony of earthquakes, that shall cause groanings in the midst of her, and men shall fall upon the ground and shall not be able to stand.
90 And also cometh the testimony of the voice of thunderings, and the voice of lightnings, and the voice of tempests, and the voice of the waves of the sea heaving themselves beyond their bounds.
91 And all things shall be in commotion; and surely, men's hearts shall fail them; for fear shall come upon all people.

(D&C 45:48-49)
48 And then shall the Lord set his foot upon this mount, and it shall cleave in twain, and the earth shall tremble, and reel to and fro, and the heavens also shall shake.
49 And the Lord shall utter his voice, and all the ends of the earth shall hear it; and the nations of the earth shall mourn, and they that have laughed shall see their folly.

(Isa. 2:19)
19 And they shall go into the holes of the rocks, and into the caves of the earth, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth.

(D&C 84:118-119)
118 For, with you saith the Lord Almighty, I will rend their kingdoms; I will not only shake the earth, but the starry heavens shall tremble.
119 For I, the Lord, have put forth my hand to exert the powers of heaven; ye cannot see it now, yet a little while and ye shall see it, and know that I am

(Heb. 12:25)
25 See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven:
26 Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven.

[“Once more” suggests that it has happened before.]

THE EARTH WILL BE SHAKEN OUT OF ITS ORBIT.

(Isa. 13:13-14)
13 Therefore I will shake the heavens, and the earth shall remove out of her place, in the wrath of the LORD of hosts, and in the day of his fierce anger.
14 And it [the earth] shall be as the chased roe, and as a sheep that no man taketh up...

(Isa. 24:18-23)
18 And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from the noise of the fear shall fall into the pit... for the windows from on high are open, and the foundations of the earth do shake.
19 The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly.
20 The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it [the earth] shall fall, and not rise again.
21 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth...
23 Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when the LORD of hosts shall reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients gloriously.

TIMES AND SEASONS CHANGED

(Dan. 2:20)
20 Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his:
21 And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:

(D&C 121:12)
12 And also that God hath set his hand and seal to change the times and seasons, and to blind their minds, that they may not understand his marvelous workings; that he may prove them also and take them in their own craftiness;

TIMES AND SEASONS REFERS TO THE EARTHS REVOLUTIONS AND AXIS.

(Abr. 3:4)
4 And the Lord said unto me, by the Urim and Thummim, that Kolob was after the manner of the Lord, according to its times and seasons in the revolutions thereof; that one revolution was a day unto the Lord, after his manner of reckoning...

(D&C 88:43)
43 And their courses are fixed, even the courses of the heavens and the earth, which comprehend the earth and all the planets.
44 And they give light to each other in their times and in their seasons, in their minutes, in their hours, in their days, in their weeks, in their months, in their years...

[i.e.  As is obvious, the earth’s “times” are a result of its revolution around the sun, and its “seasons are a result of the axial tilt.]

VALLEYS FOLDED INTO MOUNTAINS, MOUNTAINS TUMBLE TO THE GROUND

(i.e. Orogenesis and Mass Wasting)

(Ezek. 38:18)
18 And it shall come to pass at the same time when Gog shall come...
19 ... Surely in that day there shall be a great shaking in the land of Israel;
20 So that the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the field, and all creeping things that creep upon the earth, and all the men that are upon the face of the earth, shall shake at my presence, and the mountains shall be thrown down, and the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground.
22 And I will plead against him with pestilence and with blood; and I will rain upon him... an overflowing rain, and great hailstones, fire, and brimstone.

(Isa. 40:4-5)
4 Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain:
5 And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.

(Isa. 64:1-4)
1 Oh that thou wouldest rend the heavens, that thou wouldest come down, that the mountains might flow down at thy presence,
2 As when the melting fire burneth, the fire causeth the waters to boil, to make thy name known to thine adversaries, that the nations may tremble at thy presence!
3 When thou didst terrible things which we looked not for, thou camest down, the mountains flowed down at thy presence.
4 For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen, O God, beside thee, what he hath prepared for him that waiteth for him.

(D&C 133:40-44)
40 Calling upon the name of the Lord day and night, saying: O that thou wouldst rend the heavens, that thou wouldst come down, that the mountains might flow down at thy presence.
41 And it shall be answered upon their heads; for the presence of the Lord shall be as the melting fire that burneth, and as the fire which causeth the waters to boil.
42 O Lord, thou shalt come down to make thy name known to thine adversaries, and all nations shall tremble at thy presence--
43 When thou doest terrible things, things they look not for;
44 Yea, when thou comest down, and the mountains flow down at thy presence, thou shalt meet him who rejoiceth and worketh righteousness, who remembereth thee in thy ways.

(D&C 109:74)
74 And be adorned as a bride for that day when thou shalt unveil the heavens, and cause the mountains to flow down at thy presence, and the valleys to be exalted, the rough places made smooth; that thy glory may fill the earth

[Some scriptures tell of the mountains flowing down in connection with burning heat and boiling oceans and others tell of it in connection with great shaking.  Thus the “flowing” seems to be referring to both flowing lava, and liquefaction or mass wasting.]

THE SUN, MOON AND STARS WILL BE DARKENED, THE STARS WILL BE HURLED FROM THEIR PLACES, AND THE MOON WILL BE TURNED RED AS BLOOD

(Isa. 13:9-11)
9 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it.
10 For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.
11 And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.

(Joseph Smith-Matthew 1:29, 32-36)
29 Behold I speak for mine elect's sake; for nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places...
32 And again shall the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, be fulfilled.
33 And immediately after the tribulation of those days, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of heaven shall be shaken.
34 Verily, I say unto you, this generation, in which these things shall be shown forth, shall not pass away until all I have told you shall be fulfilled.
35 Although, the days will come, that heaven and earth shall pass away; yet my words shall not pass away, but all shall be fulfilled.
36 And, as I said before, after the tribulation of those days, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken, then shall appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven, and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn; and they shall see the Son of Man coming in the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory;

(Joel 2:1-3)
1 Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the LORD cometh, for it is nigh at hand;
2 A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains: a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations.

(D&C 133:41-49)
41 And it shall be answered upon their heads; for the presence of the Lord shall be as the melting fire that burneth...
49 And so great shall be the glory of his presence that the sun shall hide his face in shame, and the moon shall withhold its light, and the stars shall be hurled from their places.

(D&C 45:42)
42 And before the day of the Lord shall come, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon be turned into blood, and the stars fall from heaven.

(D&C 45:39-41)
39 And it shall come to pass that he that feareth me shall be looking forth for the great day of the Lord to come, even for the signs of the coming of the Son of Man.
40 And they shall see signs and wonders, for they shall be shown forth in the heavens above, and in the earth beneath.
41 And they shall behold blood, and fire, and vapors of smoke.

(D&C 29:11,14-17)
11 For I will reveal myself from heaven with power and great glory, with all the hosts thereof, and dwell in righteousness with men on earth a thousand years, and the wicked shall not stand.
14 But, behold, I say unto you that before this great day shall come the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall be turned into blood, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and there shall be greater signs in heaven above and in the earth beneath;
15 And there shall be weeping and wailing among the hosts of men;
16 And there shall be a great hailstorm sent forth to destroy the crops of the earth.
17 And it shall come to pass, because of the wickedness of the world, that I will take vengeance upon the wicked, for they will not repent; for the cup of mine indignation is full;

(Joel 2:30)
30 And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.
31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come.
32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance...

MORONI TOLD JOSEPH SMITH THAT THIS SCRIPTURE WOULD SOON BE FULFILLED

(JS-H 1:41)
41 He also quoted the second chapter of Joel, from the twenty-eighth verse to the last. He also said that this was not yet fulfilled, but was soon to be. And he further stated that the fullness of the Gentiles was soon to come in. He quoted many other passages of scripture, and offered many explanations which cannot be mentioned here.

LIKE AT CHRIST’S BIRTH, ONE NIGHT WILL BE LIGHT AS DAYTIME.

(Zech. 14:6-10)
6 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the light shall not be clear, nor dark:
7 But it shall be one day which shall be known to the LORD, not day, nor night: but it shall come to pass, that at evening time it shall be light.
8 And it shall be in that day, that living waters shall go out from Jerusalem; half of them toward the former sea, and half of them toward the hinder sea: in summer and in winter shall it be.
9 And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one.
10 All the land shall be turned as a plain from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem: and it shall be lifted up, and inhabited in her place, from Benjamin's gate unto the place of the first gate, unto the corner gate, and from the tower of Hananeel unto the king's winepresses.

(Isa. 30:26)
26 Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day that the LORD bindeth up the breach of his people, and healeth the stroke of their wound.

THERE WILL BE PESTILENCES.

(D&C 29:18-27)
18 Wherefore, I the Lord God will send forth flies upon the face of the earth, which shall take hold of the inhabitants thereof, and shall eat their flesh, and shall cause maggots to come in upon them;
19 And their tongues shall be stayed that they shall not utter against me; and their flesh shall fall from off their bones, and their eyes from their sockets;
20 And it shall come to pass that the beasts of the forest and the fowls of the air shall devour them up...

ADDITIONAL PHENOMENA

(Isa. 11:15)
15 And the LORD shall utterly destroy the tongue of the Egyptian sea; and with his mighty wind shall he shake his hand over the river, and shall smite it in the seven streams, and make men go over dryshod.
16 And there shall be an highway for the remnant of his people, which shall be left, from Assyria; like as it was to Israel in the day that he came up out of the land of Egypt.

(D&C 133:26)
26 And they who are in the north countries shall come in remembrance before the Lord; and their prophets shall hear his voice, and shall no longer stay themselves; and they shall smite the rocks, and the ice shall flow down at their presence.
27 And an highway shall be cast up in the midst of the great deep...
31 And the boundaries of the everlasting hills shall tremble at their presence.

AFTER THE MILLENNIUM GOD WILL MELT DOWN THE EARTH INTO SOMETHING RESEMBLING A SEA OF GLASS

[It’s hard to say exactly what this refers to, whether it will stay looking like crystal (a sun?) or whether God will immediately begin the earth’s creation process again]

(Rev. 4:5)
5 And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices...
6 And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal...

(D&C 77:1)
1 Q. What is the sea of glass spoken of by John, 4th chapter, and 6th verse of the Revelation?
A. It is the earth, in its sanctified, immortal, and eternal state.

(D&C 130:9)
9 This earth, in its sanctified and immortal state, will be made like unto crystal...

(D&C 29:22)
22 And again, verily, verily, I say unto you that when the thousand years are ended, and men again begin to deny their God, then will I spare the earth but for a little season;
23 And the end shall come, and the heaven and the earth shall be consumed and pass away, and there shall be a new heaven and a new earth.
24 For all old things shall pass away, and all things shall become new, even the heaven and the earth, and all the fullness thereof, both men and beasts, the fowls of the air, and the fishes of the sea;

(2 Pet. 3:10)
10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,
12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?
13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

THE BOOK OF REVELATION RECAPS ALL THESE CATASTROPHES.

(Rev. 6:12)
12 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;
13 And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.
14 And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.
15 And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;

(Rev. 8:1)
1 And when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour...
5 And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar, and cast it into the earth: and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an earthquake.
6 And the seven angels which had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound.
7 The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up.
8 And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood;
9 And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.
10 And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters;
11 And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.
12 And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.

(Rev. 11:19)
19 And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail.

(Rev. 16:1)
1 And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth.
2 And the first went, and poured out his vial upon the earth; and there fell a noisome and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast, and upon them which worshipped his image.
3 And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea.
4 And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and they became blood.
5 And I heard the angel of the waters say, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus.
6 For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast given them blood to drink; for they are worthy.
7 And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments.
8 And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire.
9 And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.
10 And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain,
11 And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds.
12 And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared…
17 And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done.
18 And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great.
19 And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.
20 And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.
21 And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great.

Why don’t we believe?

So why if there are so many scriptures suggesting the contrary, do we continue to believe that history as interpreted by evolutionists and uniformitarians is true?  Why do we continue to believe the scriptures do not mean what they say concerning things like the age of life on earth, Noah’s flood and the Fall of Adam?  Overall it appears that there a just a handful of simple reasons.

One of the first reason is because we make excuses.   (shorten these)

#1- The system

#2- The mysteries of God are for the church.

#3- Lack of a better explanation:  Because no one has come up with a better interpretation of the evidence!  (this is the real reason.  It just hasn’t been time yet, there wasn’t enough info…)

#4- It’s all part of the plan.

If people want to deny his power or his very existence, God makes it easy for them.  After all this life is a test.  He wants to know which societies will fall for this stuff.

Show that God has changed the times and seasons on purpose to see who is has faith sufficient to graduate to the next kingdom.  Tell about school teachers and how giving “close” answers in not deceptive on a multiple choice test.

(Abr. 3:24)
24 And there stood one among them that was like unto God, and he said unto those who were with him: We will go down, for there is space there, and we will take of these materials, and we will make an earth whereon these may dwell;
25 And we will prove them herewith, to see if they will do all things whatsoever the Lord their God shall command them;
26 And they who keep their first estate shall be added upon; and they who keep not their first estate shall not have glory in the same kingdom with those who keep their first estate; and they who keep their second estate shall have glory added upon their heads for ever and ever.

(2 Pet. 3:3)
3 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,
4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.

(2 Thes. 2:9-11)
9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,
10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:

(D&C 121:12)
12 And also that God hath set his hand and seal to change the times and seasons, and to blind their minds, that they may not understand his marvelous workings; that he may prove them also and take them in their own craftiness;

Excuses

Another reason we don’t believe is we use a couple excuses to…

Excuse #1--The scriptures are not science textbooks

One of the primary rationalizations used by many scholars to harmonize the inconsistency they find between scripture and their acceptance of conflicting scientific viewpoints is to protest, “the scriptures, after all, were never meant to be science textbooks”.  This type of apologetic device is both illogical and spiritually dangerous.  How can an inquirer be led to, or maintain, saving faith in the divine Word if the context in which that Word is found is filled with scientific and logical inconsistencies? How can one trust the Scriptures to speak truly when they tell of salvation, heaven and eternity which he is completely unable to verify empirically if he finds the data which is subject to test, is fallacious?  Surely if God is really omnipotent and omniscient, He is as well able to speak with full truth and perspicuity when He speaks of “scientific” things as when He speaks of heavenly or spiritual things.  It was for this kind of thinking that Christ chided Nicodemus when he told him “If I have told you earthly things and ye believe not, how shall ye believe if I tell you of heavenly things?” (John 3:12)

Excuse #2--There is just not enough information to know for sure

Another excuse that many use to reconcile their acceptance of conflicting scientific interpretations with scriptures is that “there just isn’t enough evidence in the scriptures to know for sure”.  This excuse most often stems from the fact that the person hasn’t ever really embarked in an in-depth study of the scriptures to discover how much there really is.  They have never truly researched what the scriptures have to say about evolution, uniformitarianism, or carbon dating.  In reality who has?  In our busy society we are much more prone to sit back in a class room and passively be taught the theories of our day than to take the countless hours needed to search through and ponder the scriptural evidence to the contrary.  In fact the way that God has set up the scriptures is to scatter little tidbits of information on any topic, randomly within the thousands of pages, so that the only people to find the truth are those who really want to know.  In reality as is shown throughout this paper, there is a wealth of information concerning these scientific doctrines.  The problem is that we don’t study the scriptures enough to believe them.  We have more faith in the philosophies of men, than we do in God’s Word.

Excuse #3—God hasn’t revealed it yet

 Likewise many more stand and watch atheism gain increasingly more converts among the world’s scientists, idly waiting for some future date when God will give us more information to help the world reconcile science and religion.  But why would God give us more, when we don’t even believe what he has given us?  The Lord has told us:
I will give unto the children of men line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little; and blessed are those who hearken unto my precepts, and lend an ear unto my counsel, for they shall learn wisdom, for unto him that receiveth I will give more; and from them that shall say, We have enough, from them shall be taken away even that which they have.  (3 Ne. 28:30)

In our dispensation this scripture is sadly being fulfilled before our very eyes.  The leaders of today’s scientific community are becoming increasingly more “anti-biblical” with each passing decade, because the scientific pioneers of yesterday dismissed the truths of creation given in the Bible.  Today’s scientific views more and more echoes that of the scientist Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche who said “God is dead”.

God knew 2600 years ago that the scientific community would convince the Gentile nations of our day to deny His existence through their naturalistic “precepts of men” and sophistry.  He accordingly warned us, in the very next verse, of the curse these faithless men are under.

Cursed is he that putteth his trust in man, or maketh flesh his arm, or shall hearken unto the precepts of men, save their precepts shall be given by the power of the Holy Ghost.

Wo be unto the Gentiles, saith the Lord God of Hosts! For notwithstanding I shall lengthen out mine arm unto them from day to day, they will deny me; nevertheless, I will be merciful unto them, saith the Lord God, if they will repent and come unto me (2 Ne. 28:31-31)

As members of the Church can no longer gullibly believe the things we are taught in our universities which conflict with revealed truth.  We can no longer suppose that the precepts of learned men are somehow superior to the revelations of God.  We can no longer think that the learned of the Gentiles who have denied Christ and the scriptures are for some reason more believable than the Word of God itself!  We must repent of our faith in the arm of flesh, and then the truth of how science and scripture correlate will become apparent.

Excuse #4 --It’s all a question of interpretation

Yet another rationalization used by many to dismiss scripture in lieu of “popular scientific theory” is the excuse that the scriptures are not to be taken literally.  This is much like the excuse that the scriptures were never meant to be science textbooks, and likewise is an excuse used primarily by those who know very little about them.  And although it is true that there are a few portions of scriptures (especially those written around the time of Isaiah), which are deeply symbolic and difficult to interpret, they are the exception, not the rule.  Jacob tells us that God took away his plainness from the Jews of that era, and “delivered unto them many things which they cannot understand, because they desired it” (Jacob 4:14).  Aside from these exceptions, the scriptures are, for the most part, “plain and precious”.

One of the largest problems with interpretation has been the failure of readers to understand the dualistic literality of the scriptures. One only need carefully read the scriptures to find that, concerning the miracles of God, they are dualistic, not merely symbolic.  In almost every case, God’s miracles literally happened while at the same time teaching a symbolic principle.  Those who suggest that the scriptural accounts of the Fall, Flood, or Second Coming are merely symbolic are grossly ignorant of God’s manner of revelation.  It is these same type of people who suggest that the Garden drama, or Noah’s Flood are merely symbolic who eventually begin to teach that fundamental Gospel principles such as the Fall, Atonement and Resurrection are also merely symbolic.  The scriptures are plain and spoken literally.  To those who wish to deny miraculous events that they do not understand, Moroni’s words apply:

7 And again I speak unto you who deny the revelations of God...

8 Behold I say unto you he that denieth these things knoweth not the gospel of Christ; yea, he has not read the scriptures; if so, he does not understand them... But behold, I will show unto you a God of miracles...and it is that same God who created the heavens and the earth, and all things that in them are.

12 Behold he created Adam, and by Adam came the fall of man. And because of the fall of man came Jesus Christ (Mormon 9:7-12)

THE MASSES HAVE ALWAYS DOUBTED GOD’S POWER

(3 Ne 1:22)
22 And it came to pass that from this time forth there began to be lyings sent forth among the people, by Satan, to harden their hearts, to the intent that they might not believe in those signs and wonders which they had seen...

(Hel 16:17-23)
17 And they began to reason and to contend among themselves, saying:
18 That it is not reasonable that such a being as a Christ shall come...
20 But behold this is a wicked tradition which has been handed down unto us by our fathers...
21 ...for Satan...did go about spreading rumors and contentions upon all the face of the land, that he might harden the hearts of the people against that which was good and against that which should come.
23 And notwithstanding the signs and wonders which were wrought among the people of the Lord... Satan did get great hold upon the hearths of the people upon all the face of the land.

[Today, instead of calling it a “wicked tradition” we would call it a silly ancient myth unfounded in science or a “Judeo-Christian Tradition”.]

(3 Ne 2:1-2)
1 And it came to pass that thus passed away the ninety and fifth year also, and people began to forget those signs and wonders which they had heard, and began to be less and less astonished at a sign or a wonder from heaven, insomuch that they began to be hard in their minds, and began to disbelieve all which they had heard and seen–
2 Imagining up some vain thing in their hearts, that it was wrought by men and by the power of the devil [or was a natural phenomena], to lead away and deceive the hearts of the people; and thus did Satan get possession of the hearts of the people again, insomuch that he did blind their eyes and lead them away to believe that the doctrine of Christ was a foolish and a vain thing.

(Mosiah 3:15)
15 And many signs, and wonders, and types, and shadows showed he unto them, concerning his coming... and yet they hardened their hearts, and understood not ...

[Is it any wonder there isn’t more historical accounts of past signs and destructions? It is human nature for the proud to “dismiss” things that force them to accept that the prophets are right, and their thoughts and behaviors are wrong.]

(Ex. 4:1,10)
1 And Moses answered and said, But, behold, they will not believe me...
10 ¶ And Moses said unto the LORD, O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue.

[God’s servants are often rejected because they do not have degrees or are not as eloquent or “learned” as others]

WE DO NOT ASK, WE ARE LAZY AND NEGLECT TO SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES FOR SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE AS WE OUGHT. WE ARE FAITHLESS.

(2 Ne. 32:4-8)
4 Wherefore, now after I have spoken these words, if ye cannot understand them it will be because ye ask not, neither do ye knock; wherefore, ye are not brought into the light, but must perish in the dark…
7 And now I, Nephi, cannot say more; the Spirit stoppeth mine utterance, and I am left to mourn because of the unbelief, and the wickedness, and the ignorance, and the stiffneckedness of men; for they will not search knowledge, nor understand great knowledge, when it is given unto them in plainness, even as plain as word can be.
8 And now, my beloved brethren, I perceive that ye ponder still in your hearts; and it grieveth me that I must speak concerning this thing. For if ye would hearken unto the Spirit which teacheth a man to pray ye would know that ye must pray; for the evil spirit teacheth not a man to pray, but teacheth him that he must not pray.

AS LAMEN & LEMUEL WE DO NOT LOOK TO THE LORD AND HIS SCRIPTURES, AS WE OUGHT.

(1 Ne. 15:1-4)
1 And it came to pass that after I, Nephi, had been carried away in the spirit, and seen all these things, I returned to the tent of my father.
2 And it came to pass that I beheld my brethren, and they were disputing one with another concerning the things which my father had spoken unto them.
3 For he truly spake many great things unto them, which were hard to be understood, save a man should inquire of the Lord; and they being hard in their hearts, therefore they did not look unto the Lord as they ought.
4 And now I, Nephi, was grieved because of the hardness of their hearts…

WE FORGET THAT THIS PROMISE APPLIES TO ALL KNOWLEDGE.

(Moroni 10:5)

by the holy ghost you may know the truth of all things.

AS A SOCIETY, WE ARE BLINDED BY A VEIL OF UNBELIEF

(Ether 4:13-16)
13 Come unto me, O ye Gentiles, and I will show unto you the greater things, the knowledge which is hid up because of unbelief.
14 Come unto me, O ye house of Israel, and it shall be made manifest unto you how great things the Father hath laid up for you, from the foundation of the world; and it hath not come unto you, because of unbelief.
15 Behold, when ye shall rend that veil of unbelief which doth cause you to remain in your awful state of wickedness, and hardness of heart, and blindness of mind...
16 ... then shall my revelations which I have caused to be written by my servant John be unfolded in the eyes of all the people. Remember, when ye see these things, ye shall know that the time is at hand that they shall be made manifest in very deed.

ATHEISTIC SCIENTISTS WHO DENY THE SCRIPTURES AS TRUTH FROM GOD MUST REPENT.

(Mormon 9:1-26)
And now, I speak unto those who do not believe in Christ.
2 Behold, will ye believe in the day of your visitation–behold, when the Lord shall come, yea, even theat great day when the earth shall be rolled together as a scroll, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, yea, in the great day when ye shall be brought to stand before the Lamb of God–then will ye say that there is no God?
3 Then will ye longer deny the Christ...?
7 And again I speak unto you who deny the revelations of God...
8 Behold I say unto you he that denieth these things knoweth not the gospel of Christ; yea, he has not read the scriptures; if so, he does not understand them...
11 But behold, I will show unto you a God of miracles...and it is that same God who created the heavens and the earth, and all things that in them are.
12 Behold he created Adam, and by Adam came the fall of man. And because of the fall of man came Jesus Christ...
26 And now, behold, who can stand against the works of the Lord? Who can deny his sayings? Who will raise up against the almighty power of the Lord? Behold, all ye who are despisers of the works of the Lord, for ye shall wonder and perish.

WE ALSO DESPISE THE PLAINNESS OF THE SCRIPTURES, OUR SOCIETY INSTEAD PUTS ITS TRUST “MODERN SCIENCE”.

(Jocob 4:14)
14 But behold, the Jews were a stiffnecked people; and they despised the words of plainness, and killed the prophets, and sought for things that they could not understand. Wherefore, because of their blindness, which blindness came by looking beyond the mark, they must needs fall; for God hath taken away his plainness from them, and delivered unto them many things which they cannot understand, because they desired it. And because they desired it God hath done it, that they may stumble.

[Many of the learned today also “despise the words of plainness” (Jacob 4:14).  They “deny the revelations of God” (3 Ne. 29:6) which speak plainly of Adam’s Fall and Noah’s Flood.

(D&C 10:63)
63... and in these things they do err, for they do wrest the scriptures and do not understand them.

IT HAS BEEN PROPHESIED THAT THE GENTILE NATIONS WOULD REJECT CHRIST.

(2 Ne. 1:?,  2 Ne. 26:?,  ….)

THE MYSTERIES ARE FOR THE SAINTS

(Jacob 4:8-9)
8 Behold, great and marvelous are the works of the Lord. How unsearchable are the depths of the mysteries of him; and it is impossible that man should find out all his ways. And no man knoweth of his ways save it be revealed unto him; wherefore, brethren, despise not the revelations of God.

(1 Cor. 2:14)
14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

(Eph. 3:8-9)
8 Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ;
9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:

(Eph. 6:19)
19 And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel,

(Rev. 10:7)
7 But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound, the mystery of God should be finished, as he hath declared to his servants the prophets.

(Mosiah 1:5)
5 I say unto you, my sons, were it not for these things, which have been kept and preserved by the hand of God, that we might read and understand of his mysteries, …even our fathers would have dwindled in unbelief, and we should have been like unto our brethren, the Lamanites, who know nothing concerning these things, or even do not believe them when they are taught them, because of the traditions of their fathers, which are not correct.

(Alma 37:4)
4 Behold, it has been prophesied by our fathers, that they should be kept and handed down from one generation to another, and be kept and preserved by the hand of the Lord until they should go forth unto every nation, kindred, tongue, and people, that they shall know of the mysteries contained thereon.

(Alma 26:22)
22 Yea, he that repenteth and exerciseth faith, and bringeth forth good works, and prayeth continually without ceasing-- unto such it is given to know the mysteries of God; yea, unto such it shall be given to reveal things which never have been revealed; yea, and it shall be given unto such to bring thousands of souls to repentance, even as it has been given unto us to bring these our brethren to repentance.

(D&C 76:2-10)
2 Great is his wisdom, marvelous are his ways, and the extent of his doings none can find 5 For thus saith the Lord-- I, the Lord, am merciful and gracious unto those who fear me, and delight to honor those who serve me in righteousness and in truth unto the end…
7 And to them will I reveal all mysteries, yea, all the hidden mysteries of my kingdom from days of old…
8 Yea, even the wonders of eternity shall they know, and things to come will I show them, even the things of many generations.
9 And their wisdom shall be great, and their understanding reach to heaven; and before them the wisdom of the wise shall perish, and the understanding of the prudent shall come to naught.
10 For by my Spirit will I enlighten them, and by my power will I make known unto them the secrets of my will-- yea, even those things which eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor yet entered into the heart of man.

(D&C 101:32-34)
32 Yea, verily I say unto you, in that day when the Lord shall come, he shall reveal all things--
33 Things which have passed, and hidden things which no man knew, things of the earth, by which it was made, and the purpose and the end thereof--
34 Things most precious, things that are above, and things that are beneath, things that are in the earth, and upon the earth, and in heaven.

(D&C 97:3-5)
3 Behold, I say unto you, concerning the school in Zion, I, the Lord, am well pleased that there should be a school in Zion…
4 And inasmuch as [the school] continueth to abide in me [it] shall continue … in the land of Zion until I shall give unto [it] other commandments.
5 And I will bless [it ]with a multiplicity of blessings, in expounding all scriptures and mysteries to the edification of the … church in Zion.

(1 Cor. 2:7)
7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:
8 Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.
11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.
12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.
13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned

OTHER SCRAPS

(D&C 46:7)
7 But ye are commanded in all things to ask of God, who giveth liberally; and that which the Spirit testifies unto you even so I would that ye should do in all holiness of heart, walking uprightly before me, considering the end of your salvation … that ye may not be seduced by evil spirits, or doctrines of devils, or… of men; for some are of men, and others of devils.
8 Wherefore, beware lest ye are deceived…

FOR MAIN PAPER BODY

(D&C 60:2-3)
2 But with some I am not well pleased, for they will not open their mouths, but they hide the talent which I have given unto them, because of the fear of man. Wo unto such, for mine anger is kindled against them.
3 And it shall come to pass, if they are not more faithful unto me, it shall be taken away, even that which they have.
And among the worlds learned, it is obvious how God is taking away “even that which they had” (D&C    ).

]Since God takes away the “talents” of those who waist them, we need to re-evaluate our faith if we want to know the truth.  Do you have faith like Nephi when he said “God can stop the earth…..(Helaman 12)”
35 Wherefore, I know by this thing which thou hast said, that if the Gentiles have not charity, because of our weakness, that thou wilt prove them, and take away their talent, yea, even that which they have received, and give unto them who shall have more abundantly.  (Ether 12:35)]

Following are a few scriptures which explain the nature of God’s works and revelations.

THE SCRIPTURES WERE WRITTEN TO BE PLAINLY UNDERSTOOD.

(2 Ne. 31:3)
3 For my soul delighteth in plainness; for after this manner doth the Lord God work among the children of men. For the Lord God giveth light unto the understanding; for he speaketh unto men according to their language, unto their understanding.

(Jacob 4:13)
13 Behold, my brethren, he that prophesieth, let him prophesy to the understanding of men; for the Spirit speaketh the truth and lieth not. Wherefore, it speaketh of things as they really are, and of things as they really will be; wherefore, these things are manifested unto us plainly, for the salvation of our souls. But behold, we are not witnesses alone in these things; for God also spake them unto prophets of old.

THE EARTH’S CREATION WAS PRE-PLANNED

(Abr 5:2-3)
2 And the Gods said among themselves: On the seventh time we will end our work, which we have councled…

3 And the Gods concluded upon the seventh time, because that on the seventh time they would rest from all their works which they (the Gods) counseled among themselves to form; and sanctified it. And thus were their decisions at the time that they counseled among themselves to form the heavens and the earth

THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD WAS PRE-PLANNED

(Abraham 3:22-24)
22 Now the Lord had shown unto me, Abraham the intelligences that were organized before the world was…
23 And God saw these souls that they were good, and he stood in the midst of them, and he said: These I will make my rulers; for he stood among those that were spirits, and he saw that they were good; and he said unto me: Abraham, thou art one of them; thou wast chosen before thou wast born.
24 And there stood one among them that was like unto God, and he said unto those who were with him: We will go down, for there is space there, and we will take of these materials, and we will make an earth whereon these may dwell;

THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD IS FOLLOWING A DEVINE PATTERN.

(D&C 52:14)
14 And again, I will give unto you a pattern in all things, that ye may not be deceived ...

ALL PHYSICAL CREATIONS ARE PART OF THIS PRE-PLANNED PATTERN.

[I.e.- The events in the scriptures are not purely symbolic or figurative, they are actual things which God made happen to teach spiritual lessons and follow his pattern]

(Moses 6:63)
63 And behold, all things have their likeness, and all things are created and made to bear record of me, both things which are temporal, and things which are spiritual; things which are in the heavens above, and things which are on the earth, and things which are in the earth, and things which are under the earth, both above and beneath: all things bear record of me.

(D&C 128:13)
13 ... that all things may have their likeness, and that they may accord one with another-- that which is earthly conforming to that which is heavenly, as Paul hath declared, 1 Corinthians 15:46, 47, and 48…

(D&C 77:2)
2 ... that which is spiritual being in the likeness of that which is temporal; and that which is temporal in the likeness of that which is spiritual...

THUS, HISTORY AND THE SCRIPTURES ARE DUALISTIC.  THEY TELL OF LITERAL EVENTS AND MIRACLES WHICH TEACH SYMBOLIC LESSONS.

(1 Ne. 22:3)
3 Wherefore, the things of which I have read are things pertaining to things both temporal and spiritual...

(1 Ne. 15:32)
32 And it came to pass that I said unto them that it was a representation of things both temporal and spiritual; for the day should come that they must be judged of their works, yea, even the works which were done by the temporal body in their days of probation…

ONE OF GOD’S PATTERNS

[The earth itself is also following the same pattern that each of us must follow. It was baptized in the flood.  Received the blood of Christ at his death, and will be cleansed by fire before and/or after the millennium]

(Moses 6:59)
59 That by reason of transgression cometh the fall, which fall bringeth death, and inasmuch as ye were born into the world by water, and blood, and the spirit, which I have made, and so became of dust a living soul, even so ye must be born again into the kingdom of heaven, of water, and of the Spirit, and be cleansed by blood, even the blood of mine Only Begotten...

Adam was the first flesh.  Put this in Body.

An additional evidence for a young earth is Moses 3:4-9. (Also Abr. 5:5-8)  At this point in the creation story God seems to go out of his way to explain that parts of the account just given were relating the “spiritual” creation of the earth and not its physical creation.  It says “but spiritually I created them before there was an animal on earth”

thus Adam was not only the first human being on earth, but the first flesh also. This accords with Later Day Saint belief that Adam was in charge of creating the earth…..? This also makes the account of naming animals in Moses ____ more reasonable.  It seems strange that this scripture would say that God caused all the animals to come to Adam to be named if there were already millions of species living upon the earth.  If however God Planted the Garden of Eden, then placed Adam in it, followed by the perfectly created, immortal, primal parents of the earth’s animal kingdoms, the scripture would make perfect sense. (Abr 5:    states pretty clearly that this is the case.)  This chronology also explains much of the otherwise confusing evidence seen in the fossil record.

MAN WAS THE FIRST FLESH ON EARTH?

[God seems to go to great lengths here to explain how Adam was indeed the first flesh upon the earth. It seems to explain here, that the account of the creation is the account of the earth’s spiritual creation. And after all things are made spiritually, God then plants the Garden of Eden and places man and animals within it. Details are lacking.... ]

-All things were created spiritually first. They were then after made naturally on earth.  By Adam’s sin things became fallen or temporal (not natural)

(Moses 3:4)
4 And now, behold, I say unto you, that these are the generations of the heaven and of the earth, when they were created, in the day that I, the Lord God, made the heaven and the earth,
5 And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew. For I, the Lord God, created all things, of which I have spoken, spiritually, before they were naturally upon the face of the earth. For I, the Lord God, had not caused it to rain upon the face of the earth. And I, the Lord God, had created all the children of men; and not yet a man to till the ground; for in heaven created I them; and there was not yet flesh upon the earth, neither in the water, neither in the air...
7 And I, the Lord God, formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul, the first flesh upon the earth, the first man also; nevertheless, all things were before created; but spiritually were they created and made according to my word.
8 And I, the Lord God, planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there I put the man whom I had formed.
9 And out of the ground made I, the Lord God, to grow every tree, naturally, that is pleasant to the sight of man; and man could behold it. And it became also a living soul. For it was spiritual in the day that I created it; for it remaineth in the sphere in which I, God, created it, yea, even all things which I prepared for the use of man; and man saw that it was good for food. And I, the Lord God, planted the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and also the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

(Moses 6:51)
51 And he called upon our father Adam by his own voice, saying: I am God; I made the world, and men before they were in the flesh.
